During next winter we will be staying at a resort that has cable. My DW wants to be able to record her favorite shows. At home we have a satellite hookup ( Shaw Direct in Canada). What would be required so we could record while we are out? We don't have a Shaw Direct dish installed on the motorhome.

Check with Shaw and see if they a web app or smartphone app. I have time warner cable and an iPhone app that allows me to control the DVR at home from anywhere. Also, with the TWC DVR we can have the DVR automatically record a series such as all NEW NCIS on channel 1110. Maybe your home DVR does as well.

Do they still sell VHS tape VCR players? But that's the old fashioned way.

There are newer video streaming (uses internet) or computer based DVR's available. But not sure if they hook up to cable.

Get a portable dish. You mean DVR.

For cable I don't condone the use of VCR.. but I'd consider a disk recorder.

simpliest way is to go to EBay and buy a VCR and a few tapes.

dVd recorders are available

stand alone DVR with bult in Tuners are getting hard to find

you can use a tuner card for your pC with PVR software that will record the shows to your pc's hard drive, just connect it to the incoming cable with a splitter,
one line to your TV one line to the PC/pvr
while doing this on the PC, you can NOT use it for anything else
video recording is CPU intense, of course you might only need to do this while your out or busy

of course you can not use the pc while the wife is watching her show

Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother
....

Connected thru Verizon with HotSpot WiFi using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Our Happauge 950 USB tuner comes w/ great PVR software that has a very good EPG (elec program guide) from the internet - you tell it your local cable supplier and all the station program schedules appear allowing you to schedule recordings like TIVO.

Even better, so she does not tie up your computer, you can save the mpeg files it creates for each show to a USB flash drive and play them on a different computer - any video software like Windows Media Player, can play the mpeg format files.

That sounds like the way to go. I can dedicate a notebook to this function and use a USB tuner card.

If I connect the incoming coax cable from the campsite to a tee, and have one of the output go to the TV and the other to the USB tuner ( like the 950Q) on the laptop would that work?

DD has two Tivo's that record off her cable TV service. They allow you to select programs from the cable schedule to be automatically recorded.

Now we've encountered a lot of different cable TV services at RV parks. Some are digital using the regular local Comcast or Cox or whatever cable service, some are "channeling" DirecTV, and some are just connected to an amplified central over-the-air antenna picking up local stations.

You might want to contact the resort and see if you can talk to someone who knows what they have and how it works - and who can probably tell you what other folks have successfully used to record from their cable.
