RE: Reviewing results from CAT scale weigh in

Curt XD I'd get that and keep your current WDH.

RE: 2018 Expedition - Rear spring upgrade

I'd donate $20 and an hour my my time to take some measurements and adjust the WDH at a CAT scale before any suspension upgrades.

RE: Reviewing results from CAT scale weigh in

4WD 8.1L 2000-2006 Suburbans weigh about 6500 pounds with a full tank of fuel. Maybe a 2WD 6.0L LS model could be 5700. The Tire and loading sticker was required on all 2006 models in US, and I remember some being in that 2100 pound range. GCWR is about 17k for 3.73 axle (10,500 tow rating) and 18.5k for 4.10 axle (12k tow rating). 200 pounds over for that rig is fine. My half ton with the same trailer I still have was 0-500 pounds over GVWR depending on how much we packed per trip. I'd try one more link hanging (1 fewer under tension) if you can. Check your WDH manual for the minimum @# of links. Also, if your hitch head tilted all the way back?

RE: Helper springs or air bags?

Spend $20 at a CAT scale to adjust that WD for 100% front axle weight restoration (despite what Ford recommends).

RE: 2018 Lincoln Navigator tow reviews

I would still aim for 100% front axle weight restoration for towing a TT. If not, then the rear axle will likely be overloaded and steering a little oversensitive.

RE: Mattress Recommendations

We used a 3" topper for 10 years. I just replaced the mattress with one from Costco for about $400. We'll see how the wife likes it...

RE: 2018 Lincoln Navigator tow reviews

Power should be fantastic, better than your 8.1L/4-spd combo! Suspension will not be as great, so I'd stick to about 6k dry and learn how to adjust the WDH for 100% front axle weight restoration.

RE: Weight of travel trailer

6k dry, assuming you have the HD towing package and either 3.5L Ecoboost or 5.0L V8 engines. Lots of power, but suspension and stability on the highway are the more practical limitations.

RE: First Long Road Trip

If you to get to a scale again, can you get the weights without any WD spring bars? That will provide data to calculate actual TW. Something seems off on the unhitched weights, unless that is with the whole family onboard and full of fuel. My estimates are your TW is around 1150 pounds and TT weighs 8850 pounds loaded. I also believe you are exceeding the receiver, rear axle, and GVWR of the Expy. For the first question: 4 links is as close as you should try to get as you have 100% font axle weight restored.

RE: F150 w EcoBoost 2.7

You have a good truck. Use Tow/Haul trans mode, keep that engine spinning over 2200rpm by limiting top gears. The best you can expect is 10mpg. The cost to upgrade trucks will buy a lot of fuel!
APT 05/03/21 09:28am Tow Vehicles
RE: Ford as a tow vehicle

I recommend using Tow/Haul trans mode all the time to disable AFM. :) If that still doe not meet your expectations and want to jump to Ford, then I recommend a 3/4 ton 7.3L if your TT is 7500 pounds dry. If 7500 pounds loaded, then the half ton will handle well. I recommend the 3.5L Ecoboost twin turbo engine, not the regular 3.5L.

RE: 3/4 ton diesel vs. gas

Comparable, no, but more than good enough as long as you accept a little higher engine speeds.

RE: Nokian Rockproof tires?

IMHO, the BFG MT KM3 and Goodyear MT3 look great on every vehicle I've seen in person. This Rockproof may have an even better side profile than those 2, but I've never seen IRL.

RE: Nokian Rockproof tires?

I love the Michelin LTX M/S tires for all driving! Great grip in rain, snow, dry while quiet and long lasting. But it looks very humble compared to every AT tire. I'm a Nokian fan, have some WRG4s on my Subaru. The Rockproof looks cool and has great reviews too. I'd try them if in the market!

RE: Questions about Reese straight line setup.

If you have a 3/4+ ton pickup, I wouldn't worry about the 1200 pound bars as I do not think you have to restore 100% front axle weight as I recommend with half tons and smaller TVs. Use those bars until they break!

RE: Towing with Auto Leveling

Agree with above, but here is some more detail. Do you remember see-saws or teeter-tooters? Push/sit on one side, other side goes up with a fixed fulcrum in the middle. That is the same physics as dropping a trailer tongue on a tow vehicle ball. The fulcrum is the rear axle, and the "other side" is the front axle. A WDH restores weight removed from the front axle. Here is a typical example: 1000 pounds of TW Drop the tongue on the ball TV rear axle increases by 1400 pounds. TV front axle loses 400 pounds. Air bags or auto leveling suspension does not change those weights. If someone were to adjust a WDH to restore all 400 pounds lost on the TV front axles, the rear axle would only have about 800 pounds more than unhitched with about 200 pounds going to the TT axles. I like what HarleyEnough said about suspension height as "an artifact of the real purpose, a measurable artifact of what it's really doing".

RE: 9th Gen 2500 Burb...cooled seat option?

Suburban was not optional for LT, only LTZ. 2500 was not offered with LTZ trim :(. I agree, I prefer the Chevy front end. I added the LTZ chrome grill overlay, and there are similar or Denali-like grills on Ebay for the Yukon.

RE: 9th Gen 2500 Burb...cooled seat option?

Option only in the GMC Yukon XL 2500 SLT. If you are looking at pictures online, check out the front doors where the switches are for memory, heat, and cooling.

RE: Chevy Tahoe 5.3L as tow vehicle

Any reputable transmission shop should have one in stock. You can order one for under $100, but a local transmission shop should do it for under $300 installed. I agree that brand doesn't matter for this item.
