Surge Protector - Hardwired without transfer switch?

My new to me TT does not have a surge protector (SP), portable or hardwired. It also does not have a transfer switch (TS). I have not yet verified, but I assume the power cord used to connect my trailer to a power source (ex. power pedestal at campground) is connected directly to inverter/charger box where 120V and 12V fuses/breakers are located. The last hardwired SP I installed was in my TH that had a built in genny. I installed the SP before the TS. I want to install a SP in my TT. MY TT is 30amp. Do I need to have a TS to utilize ALL aspects/benefits of the SP? Or can the SP be installed anywhere between the power cord and the inverter/charger? Thanks!

Wastewater Tote & Fresh Water Containers - Do you use them?

With the smaller holding tanks of the 2011 Outback 250RS (37 gal fresh and 30 gal each (Black and Gray), I was considering carrying a "Honey Wagon" tote for black and gray...... and freshwater containers (Ex. Igloo 5gal water containers) for carrying extra fresh water? Do any of you do this? My Outback 250RS is new to me (maiden voyage later this summer when it begins to cool down). We camp three adults (80% of time) and 4 the other 20%. We like state parks which usually do not have dumps at sites but do have a dump station within the park. We also stay at campgrounds with full hooks when available (wife's preference). Wife does not like using campground restrooms/showers, if they can be avoided. Also, if you have a model with rear slide out (ex. my Outback), how/where do you carry the tote? I already installed a BAL under frame spare tire carrier so no more room for another under frame carrier. Are they worth the hassle? Is the hassle equal to or less than breaking down RV and driving over to dump site? What do you do? Thanks!

RE: Generator/Inverter Mounted over Propane Tanks??

Update.... After careful analysis, we believe that we will be at non electric sites less than 20% of the time. Ethanol-free gasoline is not available in my area (and I do not believe anywhere in CA for that matter). So with the above, considering two Champion 2500 dual fuel inverters run in parallel. With this option I can decide to use either fuel as the situation dictates. Champion 2500 it just as safe to carry two 5 gal containers of gas as it is to carry two 30# propane cylinders? What about propane tanks getting hot in back of truck during summer months? Same for gas cans? I would place either container in plastic crates and strap down to truck bed under my camper shell to prevent from moving. I can also crack side windows in shell to ventilate. Thoughts?

RE: Smaller Holding Tanks...What to do when NO hookups??

Thanks for the ideas and suggestions. Got it....t's all about compromises! Lots of great ideas. I'll use the ones that apply to the scenario and work for us.

RE: Smaller Holding Tanks...What to do when NO hookups??

As far as gray / black water… Are the portable dumping totes exclusive to its contents ( one for gray and separate one for black) or does one tote handle both? Storage could be an issue? How do you carry and store when traveling?

RE: Smaller Holding Tanks...What to do when NO hookups??

Anybody use the 6 gal Igloo water containers? How’s this process of storing water in truck bed and transferring to RV tank? Is a bladder preferred? Thought of taking 3-4 in back of truck. Or a water bladder in rear of truck? A 20-30 gal water tank would be too large and take much truck bed space…, not as portable as individual water containers. Thoughts? I have an F-350 so plenty of payload,

RE: Smaller Holding Tanks...What to do when NO hookups??

Is that 30 each black and gray or combined? If it’s 30 each that’s comparable to what we have now and it’s doable. Gray is always our limiting factor. As others have said just be careful how much goes down the drain. If possible, can wash dishes in a basin and dump that outside if possible or down the toilet if you have separate black and gray. You could also use one of the portable totes for dumping gray assuming the campground has a dump station. Black: 30 Gray: 30

Smaller Holding Tanks...What to do when NO hookups??

So we made compromises....smaller TT, lighter weight, easier to tow, easier to access locations, etc. Smaller, lighter TTs usually equals less CCC which equals smaller holding tanks. The new to me TT has holding tank capacities as follows: Fresh: 37ga B/G: 30ga Brochure on TT states 50 on fresh, but called Keystone, and per VIN, it is 37. We mainly camp where there are full hookups. Some state parks offer water and gray, but no black. But when we do want to go where there are no hookups, how can we handle the limited tanks? We travel most of the time with 3 adults......4 on occasion. Thoughts?

RE: Generator/Inverter Mounted over Propane Tanks??

It appears on my new to me trailer, the genny rack will not fit. The fiberglass front cap protrudes forward enough that the genny rack would have to be mounted too far forward (to clear cap) at about even with hitch ball. During a turn the truck would hit the genny rack!! So, that means genny rack is out of the question. large 3500W or two 2200 watts? I'll have to carry gennies in truck bed and deploy as needed. Gas or propane in this instance as well. If portable and not mounted ina. genny rack...what are preferred options? Carry cans of gasoline.....or propane tanks? BTW...I also plan on carrying 3-4 6 gal water containers of fresh water as my FW tank is only 37gal. Thoughts?

RE: Hitch Selection - TW Questions

Based on one of the responses... Does weight in truck bed need to be considered when selecting a WDH? Ex. TW is 900# and truck bed has 500#....hitch and bars need a 1400# rating? Chains vs solid bars?

Hemet, CA to Klamath River RV Park, CA

Considering this family trip this summer. What is best and safest route for this trip. Would I be crossing GG Bridge (which would be great!)? Would like to split trip into two days. First stop would be midway. What is best place to stay at midway point (appears to be Tracy, Livermore, Dublin)? Trip is approximately 12.5 hours/800 according to G-Maps. Thanks!

Hitch Selection - TW Questions

I have used both Equalizer brand and Blue Ox. EQ made quite a bot of screeching sounds. BO was quiet. They both worked great. Considering both with my new to me TT (2011 Outback 250RS). GVWR of 7550#; It has a brochure TW of 640#. After I load trailer and full water tank (50Ga), I would assume it will be between 700-1100. I have a TW scale and will weigh before I decide on which model rated bars/head unit. My questions are: 1. If TW loaded is 900#-1200#....will a 1500# rated bars to stiff for the application? 2. How much over loaded TW should the hitch size (head/bars) be? 3. Bars (EQ/BO) vs Chains (BO)? Thanks!

Generator/Inverter Mounted over Propane Tanks??

I have mounted one of these on a previous trailer (2016 ORV Timber Ridge 280RKS). It worked great. I used the Stromberg-Carlson mount and a 3100W Dual Fuel Champion generator. I connected directly to propane tank. I went with propane as I did not want to deal with carrying gasoline and also carbs getting gummed after not being used regularly. Not sure if this set up will work on my new to me 2011 Outback 250RS. Nevertheless, I want to carry a genny with me. Back to debating....Dual fuel single type or two Hondas. I know Hondas are gas but they can be used independently and are very reliable,......but carrying several gallons of gasoline scares me!! Is it safer to carry a couple of propane tanks vs several gallons of gasoline? All carrying would be in my truck bed with topper. If the SC mount does not work over my propane tanks (A frame may be too short between trailer and ball), I may have to carry a genny in truck. Thoughts?

Mattress Recommendations

Looking to replace the OEM mattress. It is an RV Short King (72"x75"). I see so many options....gel infused, gel foam, memory foam, 6", 8", 12"..... I'm a big guy at 275# and wife is petite. Thanks!

RE: New trailer, new generator?

I agree that since you want to run everything a 3000+Watt genny will be needed. What are your thoughts on a dual fuel and mount above propane tanks using a Stromberg-Carlson mount? No gas to deal with, no fouled carbs, electric start !!!

2011 Keystone Outback 250RS - New Owner!

Just purchased this unit today. Original owner, SoCal, kept under awning. Unbelievable.... but lap sealant on roof has almost no cracks, only a small area (4'x4') is showing some black dots on EPDM roof rubber, fiberglass sides are still shiny, and tires are original with no sidewall cracking (I will replace tires). It's not perfect, but pretty nice for a 10 year old trailer. Family is happy! Floor plan is fantastic!!! I shopped for a couple of months......You really can't get this much interior space in a 25' box. Some sacrifices....30ga black/gray tanks, 6cf refer, 13.5 BTU AC. To do..... Roof reseal New tires Wheel Bearing/brakes serviced Personalization stuff!

Mini Swamp Cooler (Arctic Air) - Legit?

I live in HOT area of So Cal Desert! We enjoy camping in Southwest states in summers. It can get hot (100-110f). My AC is a 13.5 in a 25' trailer (29' overall). Have any of you used this product.....Does it work as advertised? Thought of placing near beds, dinette. I believe it's too big to place behind refer below condenser to help refer. Thanks!

2011 Dometic 6cf - Freezer works, Refer Does Not???

Just purchased a used 2011 Outback. 250RS. Original owner and well cared for unit. The refer was last used in Oct. 2020 without issue. Today he connected to 120V and turned on refer at 8:30am to have it ready for my 10:30am arrival. The freezer base (bottom of freezer) was very cold! The refer rear fin plates felt like room temp after 4 hours (12:30pm). He did not know why.....never happened in the 10 years he's owned it. I'll plug it in tonight at home to 120V and see what I get in the AM. RV appeared to be level in his driveway. Thoughts on how the freezer can work and not the refer?? Dometic Model # DM2652LBX Thanks! UPDATE: 6-20-21 This morning checked freezer and refer and all is well! I'll place some temp gauges in both freezer and refer to get temps. Gonna be another hot one today!!

2011 Keystone Outback 250RS - Pros/Cons?

Hello-- Considering this model. One owner and well cared for. Does anyone here have any experience with this model / brand? Pros/cons? We travel with 3-4 adults. Camping style.....70% hook up and 30% non hooks ups. 3-5 days camping and longer when hooked up. I currently have a one ton truck but plan on a 1/2 ton in the future that is why I am looking for smaller TT, but still have sleeping for 3-4. Considering the vintage, it appears to be well constructed according to attached brochure. 2011 Keystone Outback
