RE: laramie, WY to Colter Bay Village, Montana

I would take I/80 to Rawlins then 287 to 26 to Colter Bay X2 - We have used this route several times. Goes over the Togwotee Pass after passing Dubois, but easy grades going up and down. Great scenery all the way.

RE: Route from Kalispell to Gardiner

Route 93 south to I90 east to route 89 south at Livingston. No grades, easy drive.

RE: Big Horn Mountains (Sheridan/Buffalo WY)

Thanks everyone! We'd be coming from Denver area so we would be coming up I-25. Some nice ideas here, I'm tempted to pack a tent and just go at it alone here soon :) As mentioned steep grades don't bother us, but roads that are too windey do. So perhaps 14a isn't the best bet while towing. Below is a picture of the sign at Burgess Junction that shows both 14 and 14a between there and Cody. FYI, the steep 10% grade on 14a is beyond Bald Mountain campground so no issue with towing that far. The section of 14 between Dayton and Burgess Junction is not shown, but is similar to the grade and curves on the west side of 14 to Shell.

RE: Big Horn Mountains (Sheridan/Buffalo WY)

We have used two FS campgrounds in the Bighorns and loved both. Tie Flume Campground Bald Mountain Campground Tie Flume is off route 14 southwest of Burgess Junction. Bald Mountain is off route 14A west of Burgess Junction. The Medicine Wheel access road is only about 1/2 mile away from Bald Mountain and the 3 mile round trip hike at elevation from the parking area to the Wheel was well worth the effort. Note: The steep descent on 14A to Lovell begins west of Bald Mountain, so no issue with the 10% grades. Lots of boondocking locations off routes 14 and 14A. Check Google Earth.

RE: Hey 160 from Cortez CO to Hwy 89 Flagstaff?

It has been a number of years, but we have used route 160 from Cortez to route 98 to get to Page. All good 2 lane road. I recall that we stopped at the McDonalds at the junction with route 163 in Kayenta. Google Maps shows a Chevron Station with diesel there and several other places for food. Google Maps also shows a Shell Station with diesel at Shonto Marketplace at the junction of routes 98 and 160. Can't comment on cell service. Enjoy Your trip!

RE: Grand Tetons first come first serve

We have been to Gros Ventre many times over the years and never had any difficulty getting a site. There is one loop with electric. Gros Ventre is about 10 miles from Jackson, Colter Bay is about 40 miles from town. FYI, Jenny lake Campground is tents only, no RVs. If they are in a van that would fit in a normal parking spot, would that be OK at Jenny Lake? It's a RAM van that has been converted, they're renting it. I think they're going to shoot for the first come first serve at Colter Village since it has the best location for them. Best way to find out about using a camper van at Jenny Lake would be to call the Park - (307) 739-3300.

RE: Onan Microlite 4000 Generator Issue

Good suggestions already. Our 2003 Class C also has an Onan Microlite 4000 generator, probably the same model as yours. One thing I always do first when doing the monthly exercising is to press and hold the "Stop/Prime" side of the start switch on the generator itself. Within 1-2 seconds the fuel pump starts to run, which verifies that the pump functions and after running for a few seconds assures that the carburetor bowl is full.

RE: Cody, WY to Gardiner, MT

We have used 120/296 (the Chief Joseph Highway) three times between Cooke City and Cody. It is a beautiful drive, IMO one of the best in the west and the shortest way to get from Cody to Gardiner. Traveling from Cody, the switchbacks mentioned by paulj will be on the downhill side, and lower gears will be needed. If you go this way, stop at the pull outs at Dead Indian Pass and Sunlight Bridge for spectacular views. See pictures on Google maps for these locations for a preview (You may need to zoom in the get the photo icon to appear). This comment assumes you will be traveling after these roads are cleared of winter snow.

RE: Yellowstone Questions

If you decide to stay outside the park, IMO the best choice is West Yellowstone. Lots of motels and only a mile at most from the west entrance. The majority of thermal features are between Madison Junction and Old Faithful. Madison is 14 miles from West Yellowstone and another 16 miles to Old Faithful. If you are short on time, you may want to limit your tour of Yellowstone to the lower of the two loops as the majority of points of interest are there. FYI, we met our son and several friends 3-4 times for Yellowstone and Grand Teton. He flew into Jackson Hole airport and they rented a car to tour the area.

RE: Yellowstone 2020

We were most recently at Yellowstone in June 2016. Between Yellowstone and Grand Teton we were in the area for the entire month plus the first week of July. It definitely got more crowded as the month went on and was crazy in Yellowstone over 4th of July weekend. Memorial Day weekend comes early in 2020, so you will be there the last week of May. It should be much less crowded then as many families still have kids in school. In past trips we usually see very few families with school age kids until the first week of June and than it's more and more as the month goes on. We also have a 24 ft Class C and always drive it to tour the parks. Entering the park early is a good suggestion, but I would add that later in the day is very good as well. We have noticed that many people head to the campgrounds or other lodging around dinner time, freeing up parking for our larger vehicle. The end of May is near the Summer solstice so there is a lot of daylight to tour the park. This website shows that sunset is about 9:00PM the last week of May in West Yellowstone. Sunrise is about 5:45AM if you want an early start to the day. We plan to be there again in 2020.

RE: Cell service in Canada

We went to New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island for 2-3 weeks this past July. We spent three days in Eastport Maine and noticed that our phones said that we were roaming, an indication that we were connected to a cell tower across the border in Canada. We called Verizon and got on to their Travel Pass plan to avoid the roaming charges. We were told that we needed to shut off the phone in order to avoid the $5 charge if it would connect to a Canadian cell tower any time of the 24 hour day. Since we have two phones we realized that we would be paying $10/day just to have the phones turned on. After 4-5 days we called Verizon back and got onto an Unlimited plan for the rest of the trip that included Canada. For the length of our stay in Canada, I think we came out ahead with the unlimited plan.
