RE: Towing with lifted truck; need assistance

Today's trucks from the factory are too tall as it is, to really do a good job of towing a fiver without a nose high trailer. A lifted truck would be worse and there is really no way that I know of to compensate for bed rail clearance with a tall truck. I have the nose high issue with my stock truck and my fiver. I would put the truck down to stock height if at all possible, even if it is an equalizer hitch and not a fiver. Curly

RE: Observation--newer trucks tow fivers a bit nose high

The added truck height is killing me, on a good day I am 5'8" and it is a chore to get into the truck. I thought I had measured the old truck correctly but I must have missed something. The odd thing is that the top of the bed rails were very close to the same height as the new truck but somewhere, the bed height grew. Thanks for the responses. Curly

Observation--newer trucks tow fivers a bit nose high

Just came back from a 6,000 mile trip and noticed many of the newer pickups are towing fivers a bit nose high. I do the same due to the later model trucks being built that way. Just curious if anyone else has seen the same thing. Curly 2019 Chev. Double cab 2500HD, 6.0, 4:10 diffs, six speed auto 2013 Heartland Sundance XLT 265RK

RE: Fifth wheel length question

Overall I think that 30' is about right for us. We have one super slide and that gives us enough room to move about and if one of us wants to go "up stairs" to the bedroom, it gives us some separation. Curly

RE: Getting gas with long trailer?

Just watch the distance between the front of the store and with the space to the first set of pumps. Often times you can go to the right of the first set of pumps, past the front of the store and then pull to the last set of pumps for fuel on your left. Did it alot on the way to Oregon from Arizona. Also at Love's truck stops, often there is quite a bit of space from the front of the store to the pumps which really helps position for fuel, especially gas pumps.

RE: Discoverer AT3 XLT

Goodyear now owns Cooper Tire. As far as Michelin LTX tires, I would find something else. I have run numerous sets of them on 3/4 ton trucks and only get 35K out of them, at the most. Discount usually gives me credit on other tires to purchase but no more Michelin for me. Will look at Cooper or BFG. Curly

RE: Slidouts

Not a fan of cable slides here in the heat if they use plastic cable pulleys. Guess I am not a fan of schwintek slides, either..... Curly

RE: GM 6 liter vortec what are you towing with it?

I have had a few 6.0 Chevy gas trucks. Looked hard at a diesel and in fact passed on the new 6.6 gas until they had a few more miles on them. Stayed with the old tried and true 6.0 and have been happy. I would not go much over 10,000lbs payload but up to that I would not have a problem. You learn with the power curve is for the grades you are climbing and let it go. On the 2019, it gets better mileage and has more power than the '07 so I am very pleased. Life is full of trade offs...... Curly

RE: Getting gas with long trailer?

Sometimes, if you can hang back and watch the gas islands to see who on the outside is ready to leave and then you can move in. Make sure you have an exit plan but most often you can get out. It seems as though lately the distance between the store and the islands is getting tighter but most times you can negociate that distance to move all the way around them to get to the other side if you have to reach those pumps. Just be patient. Curly

RE: Compartment latches and locks

The hard locks are the slam latch locks. Would like to replace mine with different keys but I don't think that is possible. Have to lube them every few times we camp to keep them able to lock on the latch side. Use a silcone lube on them to keep them cleaner. Getting to be a real issue. Curly

RE: Rip off prices from RV Dealers

I was in a jam with a torn awning and I was not able to do the labor to install a new one. Had to pay a higher price at a dealer for them to source the fabric and do the installation. They would not install the new fabric and warranty it if I did not purchase it from them. I do understand that but the price was pretty high. Curly

RE: RVing in 2022

Fuel is getting so expensive that I may start taking trips to where I store my fiver and camp out there. Wish they had hookups........ Curly

RE: GY Endurance or Carlisle Radial Trail HD

Goodyear for me, just on the trailer tires. Not impressed with the rest of Goodyear tires..... Curly

RE: First Tow with New Trailer

Congrats on the new fiver. I am towing my Heartland about the same nose high as yours with no problems. You have a great fiver which should work well for you. Curly

RE: 5th wheel hitch security

Had a friend who had some devious person pull a couple of pins on the rails on his truck. Went to hook up the trailer and did a test pull and found out there was a problem. He purchased locks for that online and that took care of it. I think I will do the same. If you were out next to nowhere, pins could be hard to locate. Curly
