RE: Dolly towing and leveling jacks

Kinda, sorta, depends. If the rear is level as it should be, and the leveling isn't too severe, then you'd most likely be ok. Remember you'll have this big honking machine attached to the rear of the coach. It's designed to swivel as you hit bumps and dips in the road. Furthermore your coach's suspension lessens the stress on the hitch. That said, your stabilizing jacks are only designed to level the coach and only to a certain degree. You're going to add additional stress to your jacks by not unhitching. How much stress is too much? Can't answer that. Depends on your tow system, depends on how severe the out of level site is, depends on the jack system you're using and how well you've maintained it. I had one blow on me once...what an ugly mess. Scared the **** out of me and two of my neighbors too. I wouldn't do it as a matter of practice, but once in awhile and you might get away with it. Just remember, you're adding extra stress on your system by being lazy. You only have to "release" the hitch....Dennis

RE: 12 volt receptacles shorting 12 volt accessory charge cords

There are only two reasons why you would experience what you are getting. One, the receptacles are not 12VDC and reverse polarity. I believe Doug has answered the reverse polarity issue which is more common than you think. Rarely will you find them wired with a 120VDC circuit. The plugs simply screw out and they're pretty easy to get to. Hold the outside part and unscrew the inside part. Use a meter to check voltage. Since you're experiencing the same issue with all three, it's in the wiring. If someone wired one wrong they wired all three wrong. Easy and cheap fix...Dennis

Depending on the options available for your model, that plug may simply be an extra for one of those options that your coach does not have. Wire looms are made for every available option but not all those options are put on every coach. I would check for power on each wire and if one is found to be hot, I'd cap it off so that you won't have a short somewhere.....Dennis

Wishing them good luck in finding a place to park it in the Sacramento area. Only thing possible is an old KOA in P'ville and the fairgrounds which is in a sketchy part of town. Apartment is their best option IMO.....Dennis

RE: Battery questions

A mistake most people make is determining how quickly batteries charge and discharge. People think if you put a battery on a charger it should be charged up within an hour. This is false. Depending on the level of discharge, it might take several hours or even overnight to charge it fully. Also, a partially charged battery will discharge much faster than a fully charged battery. So, if you put it on the charger for an hour and then attempt to use it, it will discharge again very quickly. From your description, it sounds like your genset issue is directly related to your battery problem. One thing that you said that is questionable is that your genset is under warranty. Do you have an extended warranty, is your rig new what? If your rig is new then why did you replace your batteries? Generally, batteries will start their charging around 15VDC and then that will drop slowly as the battery reaches it's full capacity. AGMS are different than wets also, so your on board charger needs to be told they're AGMS....Dennis The following article might help answer some of your questions. Or it could be you just need it re-charged. Go to an A/C shop for advice and repairs. Most DIY don't have the necessary equipment to test/fix dash airs that work but don't blow cold.....Dennis

My coach weighs in at 49,650 pounds. Make sure your 'grass' can hold that. Also, pray it doesn't rain just before you're ready to head out. DPs are much heavier than gassers.....Dennis

RE: How long can you go on a 50 amp extension cord?

1. You should be ok with 50amps at 100'. 2. Since the trailer is already hooked up, it's safe to assume the receptacle is correct. 3. 100' will weigh a bunch but I would assume you're not going to be lugging it around much. 4. Depending on your situation and how long you'll be using the cord, I'd protect it by slicing a few pieces of 1 1/4 pvc for it to lay on to protect it from rodents and gravel etc. 5. When you're finished with it, you can always cut it up into smaller pieces which are more manageable. My cord is 45' on a reel. I carry another two pieces. One is 25' and the other 15'. Plugs at both ends allow me to plug in almost anywhere....Dennis

I bought mine new in 2014 and found it to be an excellent all around toad. That said, every toad has it's faults. Best toad I've had was the Chev HHR which is no longer made. The only difference though was the HHR had more interior room due to it's layout. The Equinox has been a trouble free vehicle with over 41,000 miles on the odometer and around 60,000 towed miles. We have the LTZ 4cyl model and I would get the 6cyl next time around because of the steering. The 4 has electronic steering and the 6 hydraulic. The 4 suffers from the 'death wobble' while the 6 does not. It's been solved with pulling a different fuse but you must add a charging module. ($49) so no biggie. For 2020 I believe they made some minor changes so you should look at the owner's manual to see what needs to be done to tow it four down. The body is the same. You might also look at the Blazer which looks great from the outside. I haven't spent any time at a dealer recently so I can't give you any info on them. I'd recommend the Equinox based on my success with it. Hook it up, put it in neutral, flip the switch and go....Dennis Click HERE for the 2020 towing guide.

In the Monaco line, only the luxury coaches were built on a steel frame. All the others are aluminum. Only if you're concerned about rolling your coach over from time to time. Rarely do you find coaches rolling over although it does occur...Dennis

By checking, do you mean you looked at them or used a meter. A visual can often look good but it's failed. Use a meter for accuracy. Mine will not come on if the vent is not opened. The fact both are not working indicates a faulty wire somewhere so that's a good thing. That is, assuming they worked at some point in time....good luck...Dennis

One caveat I always recommend to both newbies AND experienced RVrs. ALWAYS video tape your WALK THRU. If you do contact a mobile tech, video tape his walk thru with you. If not, and you have another rvr assist, video tape that as well. Build your own reference library. Videos take up very little room on your computer or put them on a jump drive for future reference. Finally go thru your rig and know where the basic things are: Inverter/Converter, fuse panels (there may be more than one), what type of batteries you have for the engine and chassis, how your fridge works, 30amp/50amp etc etc. These are all things you'll need to know to help troubleshoot. Finally, know what engine and trans you have and post that in your request for help. These are essentials....good luck...Dennis

Well thanks a bunch you guys. We are not snobs but do love the Class A resorts such as Bella Terra in Alabama, Petosky RV Resort in Michigan, Solstice in Nevada, Hilton Head in So Carolina and the one Monaco built, Motorcoach Country Club in California. We've enjoyed them all. We've also stayed at Thousand Trails parks and even some sketchy ones. Staying at a Luxury Resort is like going out for lobster dinner. You can't afford one every night but every now and again it's enjoyable. We even spent 4 months as a camp host at one of the above parks. Most who diss the luxury parks have never visited one. Sure, they're more expensive but saying those who stay there are snobby is like judging a Prevost owner as a snob. We are simply down to earth folks who enjoy some luxury in our travels. Don't judge me by where I stay or what I drive.....Dennis
