RE: What's a decent battery charger?

2004 Ford courtesy light in cab stays on all night, need a boost every morning. It is supposed to go out if the light switch is turned to half way but this one never goes out unless I disconnect the battery.

RE: Old automotive battery charger question

Thanks for the first post. I was getting our class C ready for some short trips and somehow drained the engine battery. No problem I thought I’ll just use my Black & Decker smart charger. But it refused to charge. After reading the first post I borrowed a dumb charger and got it charged enough for the smart charger to top up.

RE: Battery & electrical questions

Thank you for finding it! I still haven’t found the fuse that has voltage only when the engine is running. I have the E350 manual with names and numbers but it doesn’t seem to help. Just a matter of time, though. I should have saved a photo of the connection. I have some other DC problems (rear view camera). I will be 70 next month and I’m not as able as I was. Darn!

RE: Battery & electrical questions

Slightly off topic, sorry. I set up an alarm for the house door steps that rings when the engine is running and the steps are down. Unfortunately it quit working and I’m having trouble fixing it. I initially found a fuse in the fuse box under the steering wheel that provided 12 volts only when the engine is running. Anyone have a fuse chart to help me find it again? A few years ago I posted the whole thing in this forum. I would appreciate a link to it.

RE: Buying a Former Rental Class C. How many of us out there?

We bought our 2004 Ford E350 Canadian 20 foot class C former rental in 2008. It has been very reliable. In 2020, I found a local repair shop, owner a mechanic with a great reputation and got them to change the spark plugs, transmission fluid, etc, replace all shock absorbers, change gear oil in the rear end, and change coolant. Wonder of wonder there was no problem with the spark plugs and the owner mechanic knew it in advance. It cost $2500 all told. We have one problem I would like help with. We had never used an RV when we bought the MH and knew nothing about the hot water heater. It got turned on while plugged in to electric power and the switch smoked and smelled. In the next 13 years we never had water in the heater. Looking into the tank it looks rusty. I would like to upgrade to a new water heater. Anyone know if it would be possible? Estimate of cost to have it done at an RV dealership?

How to find the polarity on insulated wires? Follow the wires to a light or switch and use a voltmeter touching the probes to the contacts. If this is awkward use a couple of straight pins to penetrate the insulation and contact the insulation and contact the copper. Then use the meter. When Current is flowing a clampmeter can indicate the direction of current flow.

RE: Changing Spare Tire

I’m age 69 and comfortable changing a front wheel with the tools I carry all the time. In 12 years of RVing I have never needed to change a wheel on the road but we often travel away from civilization like the trip to the big waterfall and spectacular rock formations south of Tumbler Ridge, BC. I have had to change a wheel on smaller vehicles about 3 times in 30 years of driving so it won’t happen often. I am afraid to try changing a dual wheel. I would like to view such a change with the two wheels stuck together and see how to handle that problem. Meanwhile, I have upgraded my wife’s Alberta Motor Association membership to cover RV wheel problems. Are there short term coverages available for a month cruise in the USA?

RE: Best tire inflator for dually tires

I used the Milton inflator tool on the right for a couple of years until it started leaking air. https://i.imgur.com/U3do5dMl.jpg Note the post in the business end: it tends to slip away from the Center of the opening for the tire valve and fail to open it - allowing the compressed air to leak away. There is a black rubber ring that is supposed to hold the post in the center that seems to be worn out. I went back to the same store to complain and they sold me an identical new one. Stupid. It leaked, too. Same problem. Turning the slotted business end gives access to the rubber ring so it could be replaced if I could find or make one of the right size I could make it work again. I bought a new DILL USA from another store which worked. It works well new and hopefully will last for a longer time.

RE: Lake Louise trailer park or Icefield parking lot.

Pianatuna’s post is right on. I must add that a short drive, bus ride, or long uphill walk takes you from the roomy campsite to the beautiful lake. Take time to walk to the far end of the lake.

B.C. man drives stranded American family 1700 km to Alaska

A Fort St. John, B.C. man is earning praise for driving an American family in need from northern B.C. to the Alaskan border near Beaver Creek, Yukon. The roughly 1,700-kilometre trip up the Alaska Highway in winter didn't deter him from volunteering to help out, said Gary Bath. Bath said he noticed an online plea for help last week from an American woman driving to Alaska who was overwhelmed by the winter driving conditions and couldn't drive any farther. CBC story
