RE: Ford Gas 6.2 vs 7.3

Other than being thirsty I like my 2021 F350/6.2/10 speed towing 16,000+ locally. Add 1.5” blocks to the helper spring so they contact sooner reducing the squat.

RE: When do Snow Birds head south??

Headed south yesterday… got 10 miles and large cloud of white mist out the back…antifreeze everywhere. Took several times of having the DW start the engine while I watched underneath to find the leak. Fortunately just a heater hose was the problem and $4 in parts (splice and 2 clamps) plus 8 gallons of antifreeze and back on the road in under 2 hours. The 1” section I replaced had a thin area but not from having been rubbing on anything…we’ll supported and zip tied. Probably a defect from day one.

RE: Lithium battery as starter assist

“I need to use the battery combiner dash switch to start the engine.” Because of the higher voltage I would hold the boost switch down for a minute to charge the engine batteries so even though the Lithium’s BMS will only give you 100 amps, the higher voltage should make the difference.

RE: lithium question

Why would you replace 2 new AGM batteries (good for 5+ years) with overpriced Lithiums…in 5 years the prices will be even lower. Assuming the cells I bought finally arrive, building a LifePo4 battery for $1/AH makes them price comparative with AGMs but 3X the cycles.

RE: 45ft, would I be too limited?

We stay mainly in public campgrounds during the summer without reservations and recently went from a 42’ to a 45’ MH. Only once in 17 years has this not worked out for us as we know better than to go in on Friday hoping to find a site long enough. Last summer I made sure we arrived at our favorite small USFS CG outside of Rocky Mountain on Thursday at 9 AM… By noon there were no sites available. It was our first night in Colorado as normally we arrive late Sunday or Monday to get a site.

RE: LED Lights

Over 10+ years the only cheap China/EBay LEDs I haven’t had good service out of are the strips. Fortunately I used 48 LED 5050 panels in my fluorescents. Originally I used warm white (3000) but now that there are daylight bulbs (5000) I like them better…have used bright white (7000) outside. A led draws 1/10th the power of a halogen bulb.

RE: Old indoor propane lantern help

Before putting a mantle on it, like any flame, you want a bluish flame.

RE: Stability Issues

Since you previously said when asked… “How long and how much to spend?Shorter is better -- say 25 ft. Budget: maybe $30K”, so, YES it’s going to have handling problems.

RE: Winterizing lithium batteries

I would charge them to 13.2V (70%) and then disconnect them.

RE: Does Anyone See A Need For a Portable Generator?

Do you really want gasoline stored in your MH? The best thing you can do for a generator is to use it and at half a gallon/hour, how much fuel are you saving with a portable and are they really quieter for those with delicate hearing? My generator run time decreased from 2 hour to 1.5 when I installed a residential refrigerator by adding a $200, 100A charger, doubling my charging capacity. Since then I DIYed 900 W of solar with a payback of 25+ years because the secret of boondocking in the summer (only time we do) is elevation and SHADE so you do not need AC. My generator run time is still over 1 hour…I run it anytime I’m using a high amp appliance.

RE: When do Snow Birds head south??

Usually leave Christmas Day (best day to travel anywhere in the world) and usually home for Easter. Some snowbirds from way up north bring their rigs south before the roads get salted and then fly home for the holidays. Canadians tend to spend 5+ months in the South.

RE: Planning summer 2022 trip to Alaska Fly/Rent

I would rent for 7 days and head to the Kenai peninsula…forget Denali. Use the other 7 days for a cruise back to Vancouver. Don’t need a balcony cabin as it can be to cold to use and you are off the boat all day…$100/day/person.

RE: TR: North Rim of the Grand Canyon

Thanks for the great pictures. N Rim is one of our favorite places.

RE: 600 hp

My rig has the ISX 525 Cummings engine which I bought before learning of the intake valve issue. My take on this is the higher the horsepower the sooner the acid from the EGR eats the face of the intake valves with number 6 being the first to go. Why #6 is first… maybe because it’s lower (engine is not mounted level) and the acid settles there (engine off). OTR trucks rarely have this problem as they do not sit unused for months at a time. This is my educated guess of what’s going on. The fix appears to be new intake valves made out of better metal that resist the acid. $25,000 if you put the “new and improved” head on before it trashes the turbo and possibly the pistons.

RE: Moving over to the motorhome forum

Welcome to the dark side…you’ll enjoy the flexibility and ease of a MH. Good luck! I have seen plenty go from 5er to MH and came right back to 5er. try it, you might like it. I’m never going back and I even have a 2021 F350

For 10 minutes, start the generator. Pay me now or pay me later.

RE: Gasser guys and gals ...why not a diesel ?

As long as yo don’t go over 38’ in length you do not need a diesel.

RE: Do you always need an RV Park ? .....

In the summer out West we dry camp 5-6 days/week and travel and resupply on the weekends without reservations. Yes, the past 2 summers have been busier than normal… fortunately the newbies need reservations and FHU while we like Public CGs that don’t take reservations. In 20 years of doing it this way I can only think of 2 times this has not worked out…2 summers ago in Moab. Dispersed camping in 100 degrees running the generator 24 hours didn’t add up so 4 hours later we were in Grand Mesa, CO with frost the next morning.

RE: Any 80mph PLUS - class Aers still on here ?

At the bottom of a hill where I can see way ahead I’ll occasionally let it get above 80 instead of putting the brakes on. Two summers ago headed east across Kansas I had a 30+ mph tailwind and got passed by a Prevost at 75… my usual is 65.

RE: What is too hot

I use a IR temp gun on the side of my tires near the tread… easiest place to temp the inside dual and highest temp I’ve seen is 140. Not sure of the relationship of the temp at a valve stem and the side of the tire. Have read that you should start worrying at 180 but 150 would worry me based on many years of checking.
