RE: Solar Tax Credit

Yes, I googled it first and didn't see a clear answer, that's why I thought I'd see if anyone here with a trailer/fifth wheel had done it. Somehow I have doubts that a beaurocrat on the phone will understand the difference between a motorhome and a fifth wheel. But I might have to find out. JK

Solar Tax Credit

I had a complete solar system installed in Quartzsite earlier this year and I have since found out that the IRS has a 26% tax credit for solar installations on your primary or secondary residence. They accept an rv as a second residence, but I've seen references to motor homes and mobile homes, not travel trailers or fifth wheels. I've also seen descriptions by others that a dwelling with a bed, toilet and stove as acceptable. Anybody have any experience with this? We spend considerable time 'living' in our rig. JK

RE: Reservations

We usually call ahead a few hours, but even then they are sometimes full, especially Passport America campgrounds. It's nice knowing your destination is confirmed. JK

RE: Looking at '17 3500 Ram

JK have you ever weighed your rear axle loaded? I am betting you are over-inflating for your load. Sure, I go to the scale a couple times a year. In June the rear axle was 6780, and the RAWR is 7000. I believe the Firestone chart would call for 75 lbs, so I wouldn't say I'm out of line. Wow, 6,780# on the rear axle with a 5er that has a GVWR of 12,485#, what else do you carry in the bed. Our 5we is a bit over weight, and carries a pin of 2,700#, never had the rear axle on the 2001 Ram near 6,000# with a heavy in bed tool box. LOL... not a lot! 100 lb Champion generator, that's it. OK- my Demco autoslide with puck adapter is about 310lbs and my pin weight is 2840, so about 3250 in the bed. If interested, here's my weights with pretty full tanks and plenty of beer in the front closet. Front axle- 5140 Rear axle - 6780 Trailer axles- 9200 Total- 21,120

RE: settle an arguement

Hi all, My husband and I are having a discussion about getting a 5th wheel. We currently have a TT but I've heard that a 5th is easier to tow. As I have not driven this TT, and I need to learn as we are not spring chickens, I was looking for something to make the drive easier for me. Anyway, we have a 2015 F350, single rear wheel, crew cab, 4x4, 6.2 gasser. I say we should look at 5ths that are 10,000 or below. He says we can go higher. What is the formula again for determining weight? Thanks! You don't give any numbers about your TT, but your gas engine might feel quite underpowered towing a fifth wheel. A general rule of thumb has been over 10,000 lbs = diesel truck. And I learned the hard way.

RE: Looking at '17 3500 Ram

Looks like a beauty! My 2018 has been almost flawless. They replaced the radio due to a Uconnect problem. And the rear tires only lasted 25k from all the towing torque. 33k miles on it, over 20k of those are towing. Fantastic truck! JK Rear tires only 25K???? Must have been some cheap tires or underinflated for the weight I tow 2K# heavier 5th wheel then your Highland and get 60K Plus on my tires I keep close to 80 lbs when towing. They are Firestone Transforce, like all HD Rams that I've seen. The fronts have very little wear, and if I would have rotated them (like I will now) they will last much longer. I can feel them squirm when turning left from a dead stop on an incline from the torque when towing.

RE: Pin Box again Moryde vs Trailair

I'm typically 50-60 lbs with a 2800 lb pin. I don't run it up to the top of the arrow. Why keep it at the top of the stroke, I like to keep the shock in mid stroke and watch it float behind me. I found it's also a good tool for the correct trailer brake gain, when it's right the shock absorber will neither compress or extend during braking. JK

RE: Help figuring out DOT tire code

Look for that oval outline like on Old Biscuit's pic. That's the mark left by the insert in the tire mold where they change the date code. JK

RE: Any one else giving up snow birding due to the covid

We've been retired just a couple years, and snowbird only for the second half of winter. We've only gone southwest because of Florida being crowded, expensive and impossible to find spots... don't want the hassle. But since so many people seem to be canceling trips for this winter, I thought this could be our chance to see Florida. While many places are still booked solid, I managed to get reservations for a couple weeks in Florida before heading to the desert. Hopefully conditions are headed in the right direction by then. JK

RE: Colors of trucks!

My last white vehicle was about 47 years ago. A 1963 Pontiac Lemans wagon with many, many rust accents. My Ram is Delmonico Red and my AMX is Big Bad Green. JK

I have a 2018 with the 8.4 and it should stay in the mode you had it in when you turned it off. JK

RE: The price of new trucks is beyond comprehension!

Those prices go up almost every day. Two years ago when looking for my current truck, I would look at the window stickers online and would see identical trucks with different prices. Comparing them, I would see that the one with the higher VIN (most recently built), some items were more money. Sometimes the base price, sometimes an option or package, or sometimes transport. For the same model year. JK

RE: Strom Thurmond Lake & Hartwell Lake GA/SC

We stayed at Lake Hartwell COE a year ago and it was nice. I noticed a couple people had boats in the water at their site. The only negative thing was, when we arrived we noticed white powder on the ground at our site and others. The host confirmed it: ants. We had no problems with them at all though. JK Edit-- I just remembered, this is where we discovered Huddle House. I just love their breakfast.
