RE: Mattresses, what’s your recommendation and why?

Growing up I could sleep on most anything, anywhere. My favorite is a cot in a sleeping bag. Since that's not an option in my current RV I would prefer a mattress that keeps the DW and I comfortable all night long. Heck, in the early years of our relationship we fell asleep on the 9th fairway and did not wake up until it was almost too late! Thank goodness it was not the 1st fairway!

RE: Auxiliary brake system

Find and use whatever braking system you like. Just don't go without one!

RE: Mattresses, what’s your recommendation and why?

If you are in TX or CO, Texas Mattress Makers (.com) will make you any size/shape mattress to fit the space available for the same price as their showroom mattress. Denver Mattress will do the same but I am not sure of the pricing. We have the Texas Mattress Makers unit and we were able to customize the thickness and the topper material as well as having the foot of the bed rounded to the exact shape of the foundation.

RE: Clogged Black Tank

"IF" you have verified the valve is open and you think there's something stuck you can buy a cap for your outlet connection that also has a hose connection like this one.Sewer cap You can then connect a garden hose and turn the water on just a bit and see if the water flows back into the tank. If it does you can turn it on a bit more and hopefully get whatever is there out. You will want 2 people so you can push the valve closed at the same time someone is shutting off the water and there will only be minimal mess. From inside, if you open the toilet flush valve, can you see anything? If you pour a 5 gallon bucket of water down the toilet do you get 5 gallons out pretty quickly or is that where you only get a trickle?

RE: Surge Protection

I had the same 50 amp in my Prevost and it was an excellent system. There is no reason to replace it or upgrade it assuming it's working properly.

RE: Backup Camera System Options

While there may be other options, your best option is to keep a hard-wired back up cam. RVCAMS was able to provide me with a system that worked with the existing wiring in the RV I owned that was over 20 year old.

RE: Winegard antenna… what’s it good for?

^^^^ X2 ^^^^^ However, if you want something under a dome that you can't screw up (did we stow that antenna?), the Winegard Rayzar Automatic is really pretty good. It is NOT omni-directional and you just push a button as each new location and its internal antenna rotates to find the best signal(s) in your area.

RE: New to RVing and Already Upgrading

Looks like they already bought a Jayco Precept 31UL.

RE: Gas Class A

Unless it has changed in the last few years, I did not have to do anything with my air brakes and there was nothing about air brakes on the test when I qualified for by TX class B license driving a Prevost. It has likely been over 10 years since I got the license so it's possible things have changed.

RE: Gas Class A

It may exist in some States but not FL, TX or SD (full timers States). TX does require a Class B upgrade for ALL RV's over 26,000# but is in no way related to air brakes.

RE: RV registration in SD

I believe you would find yourself in hot water. Nearly every State and Insurance company requires that all of your vehicles be registered in your home State (determined by your drivers license). Ask those who have registered their RV's in Montana to avoid taxes in their home State and have their cars registered elsewhere.

RE: Opinion on Forest River Berkshire Quality

Tiffin and Newmar would be my #1 and 2 choices but I am not that familiar with the FR products. I just know that the owners tend to be huge supporters of those products and their support.

RE: Macerator and Drop-Ins

Give Happy Camper a try. Get powder and best product I've ever found. There, is of course, the argument that you don't need any chemicals if you use enough water, but from time to time I will throw a bit in there.

RE: Hooking up to water/sewer

I like to hook up to city water, fill my tanks, turn off the water and use the water from the fresh water tank. Refill as necessary when the FW tank gets low. This keeps fresh, sanitary water in the FW tank and keeps that water fresh and drinkable at all times. Dumping procedures have been discussed.

RE: Winegard antenna… what’s it good for?

Winegard does make a dome for the reception of local OTA TV. It is not the same as a satellite dome and the 2 are not interchangeable but rather purpose specific. It sounds like you have a satellite TV dome which should work with either DirecTV or DISH. There should also be a separate antenna up there for your OTA TV reception. That antenna will likely either be the Batwing style antenna or a disk shaped omni-directional antenna.

RE: Towing 5K # with a gasser

What are the RV weight ratings? What is the tow hitch rating. You need to know the max RV weight without a towed and the combined rating for fully loaded with towed. GVWR (I think).

RE: Deisel handling

Do deisels generally require upgraded suspensions in order to handle good on the road? I have a 30ft gas and had to put $4500 into upgraded suspension in order for it to be safe to drive. As a direct answer, and with all politics and whining aside, the chassis that a diesel RV is built on will not require upgraded suspension in order to handle well. In most cases, there are not even upgrade options available for this kind of RV. My first RV was a diesel pusher but was also a very low end coach and it did not handle well either. It was under powered and on a chassis with 19.5 tires (early 1990's). These just don't really exist any longer in the current RV market and you should expect excellent ride and handling from a diesel powered RV. If you want the best diesel ride then you will want to buy one with a tag axle as the ride and handling is determined by the chassis and not the power source.
