RE: Military Chapter/Group within Good Sam?

Update: Got a reply from someone at national GS. They denied knowing about any such chapter/club etc at their level.

RE: Military Chapter/Group within Good Sam?

Seems to me active duty would have little use for a specific group/chapter. “someone affiliated with one of my state's local chapters” ? I was told it was an 'at large' type deal when I was inquiring about a local NV GS Chapter. Apparently the person that got back to me & told me this stuff is an officer of some sort in one of the Nevada Good Sam clubs.

RE: Military Chapter/Group within Good Sam?

Was emailing back/forth with someone affiliated with one of my state's local chapters about their club & they mentioned it to me.

Military Chapter/Group within Good Sam?

I heard that Good Sam has some sort of at large chapter/group (might be fairly new, might not?) for military members to be a part of. True / Not True?

RE: Crazy Parts Prices from Manufacturers

Mowermech - It's like a meme I recently saw where someone goes into an Autozone needing to replace the clutch in their 19-whatever-year BMW car. Autozone dude asks them if the car is a standard or automatic....... Sad part is I would bet that really happened.

RE: Ford V10 vs Pending V8

I know if I was in the market for a new C I'd definitely wait for the V8. We're deep into the 2,000s & engineering / manufacturing of internal combustion engines has arguably never been better. Lots of experience & LOTS of computing power running design & construction make it so. I don't worry about '1st year stuff' like I did 2-3 decades ago. IMHO Ford's had a really good track record with the last few truck engines they've rolled out, right from the starting block e.g. 3.5L EcoBoosts & 6.7L Powerstroke to name 2 of them.

Crazy Parts Prices from Manufacturers

Recent eye-opener. Got a burnt out marker light on my Demco dolly on my last trip. Called Demco, parts dude quoted me $30 (plus shipping) :R. Went on Amazon & got the OEM part for about $7 shipped. I can see some mark up but my goodness.... don't these companies realize there's such thing nowadays as the internet?

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

Substituted technology for human interaction. I guess in the future we will probably have virtual reality friends that will mirror or own personality. Virtual reality campgrounds where you always have a perfect experience. Like the Star Trek holideck. Sometimes I wonder if were not digressing as a society. Amen brother.

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

I think this topic has come more from the psychological bents of the OP more than the reality in the camping/RV world. Your way of dealing with others is reflective of how others see and deal with you. I would put forth the preceding 13 pages (& counting) of this thread, with most of the comments kind of agreeing with my perceived observation ref people being more anti-social nowadays, as indicative that it's not a personal-to-me-phenomenon due to my 'psych bents'. But then again I am biased. ;) I also think you may have missed a big part of what I've been noting in the thread.... it's not that I'm bemoaning the fact that people rebuke me &/or the wife when we initiate any kind of human contact with other campers, but rather that it's RARE to even see anyone outside of their rig's nowadays, & when we do people seem to be taking A-->B tracks that intentionally avoid contact with strangers. Hence the 'take' that on the whole, people are a lot more anti-social nowadays.

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

I was thinking about this. Maybe you have changed too ? Is it possible that years ago you had a more modest camper and stayed in different types of parks then the ones you do now ?? If you now have a large expensive camper and stay in private parks, or different types of parks then you used to, then that could be a difference too I suppose. Valid point / question the answer to for us is 'yes' we've self-reflected on the possibility of it, however, the answer to both things is very definite 'no' for us. We have a very modest rig nowadays by any RV description, stay in ordinary campgrounds & the fact we've had to post about what we feel is a modern-day phenomenon that is lots of people being non-social seems to be proof that we're not the ones being anti-social.... we're sad that so many other RVers seem to be nowadays.

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

Also I think those of you who don't understand why we don't want to kick back and do beers or martinis, the US is a very diverse place. Some don't drink for religious or health reasons, some play mah Jong instead of rummy, some don't speak English as a first language or come for predominantly minority communities. It's not 1960 any more. Your way of socializing is not mine. Live and let live. I have no problem with respecting anyone's prerogatives in regard to how they do it (camping/RVing). I don't force interaction / socializing on anyone & I'm very good at reading things like folks' body language & whatnot. This intent of this thread was about my observation that once upon a time, not too awfully long ago, RVing was like off-roading & boating was/is.... an activity where you were constantly around cool/interesting people that knew how to 'play hard' & enjoyed being around others that did as well.

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

Update to my 1st post of the thread. We were out in SoCal last week for 4 nights/5 days, part of which ran thru the weekend, at a military rv park that was basically near capacity the entire time. We hardly got a glimpse of anyone else & this was with daytime temps in low 70s (absolutely beautiful weather to be lounging around outside). Each time out now I'm getting more convinced people nowadays are either hermits, paranoid that everyone else they've never met is a threat to be avoided, &/or are in the initial phase of some witness protection program 8-). The Mrs has actually started looking into seeing what some of the RV clubs are about, which I never thought we'd be doing as I see them as more of a retired or full-timer's deal (which is not us).

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

I never have problems finding people to talk to. Maybe it's you, lol You know the reason I started this thread is b/c I was starting to wonder if it wasn't me (& the Mrs). Never had an issue for years before (neither did she) & judging from a # of the responses here it seems it might not just be me (&/or the Mrs). ;) Used to be if you were hanging outside with a beer/drink, bbq'ing etc, nearby people would see that as an opportunity to interact some.

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

Social media, as in internet forums,....or join Escapees BOF or Family Motor Coach Association. There's plenty of events there, where you meet real people. Today is the last day of the year, time's a'wasten... Ya know I've looked into those but it seems to me like these are way more useful for retired / full-timers rather than for weekend warriors like the wife & I am.

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

Absolutely Powertour! Been RVing since 1974, in parks, boondocking, etc. Shoot, there was always socializing going on. You would wave at somebody driving down the park road and wave, they would wave back. Now you get either "that deer in the headlight look" or the facial expression of "what the heck are you waving at me for"? It also carries over to being on the road. This past summer quite a few folks were telling about trying to get an RV driver that there was a problem with their rig. And they would just motor on. I hear ya & think it's a sad thing. Side note: Last week my wife was helping a younger girl push her disabled car out of traffic & dozens of people just drove right on by them....

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

We tend to more see "shut-ins" at upscale RV parks/resorts in hot weather where AC is used. I don't think that I've seen fewer people wanting to socialize. I always do the rounds at CG's, and sit outside at the table or lounge chairs as much as the weather permits. Have you tried cooking bacon outside in the morning? LoL on the bacon thought. People must have a lot more comfy beds that we have as seems like nobody is up & about until lunch. We hang outside to the max we can & usually have our pups with us (& they're the kind of small dog that a lot of people like) & almost always have a beer cooler out beside the lawn chairs!

RE: Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

We both work full time so we are basically weekend warriors and we enjoy talking to the full timers about their adventures traveling the country. Burch Same with us i.e. we both of us work full time as well. We've haven't been to the same RV park twice & covered 2 states so far (NV & CA) & it's been pretty much the same everywhere...

Is Socializing a Dying Thing in the RV Community?

Was excited to get back into RVing in the last year as both the wife & I had done a lot of RVing in past lives going back a # of yrs. One of the things we were looking forward to was getting to meet new people along the way. So far in a 1/2 dozen trips or so back into it, with the exception of 1 trip we've only seen what I would call 'shut-ins'. Understand not everyone wants to chit-chat with strangers / some might prefer peace & quiet, but it's really been kind of a drag not running into neat / interesting people while camping. Never thought one would have to join a club in order to have some social interaction out on the road but I'm beginning to wonder if that's just the way it is nowadays....

How many trailer balls have you had or know of anyone else that have had problems with quality control on them? IMO there’s no sense in paying double but it’s your $.
