RE: 2500 Chevy Duramax vs 2500 Ram Cummins on the Ike Gauntlet

My take is with this small camper the 6 speed/Cummins combo was a good fit. Go to 30k lbs and I believe you'll see a different outcome or different varying size slopes/hills.
The inline 6 does JUST FINE with the 6 speed. Higher revving V8 diesels may do better with more gears.
High revving V8 diesels??
The Durmax makes it peak Horsepower of 445 at 2800 rpm The same rpm that the Cummins makes 420 peak Horsepower. And the ford makes its peak horsepower of 475 at 2600 rpm.

RE: Best RV route Palm Springs, CA to Denison Texas

We take I 10 toward Phoenix-than before Phoenix we take bypass at Buckeye to Gila Bend-than back to I10 South.
X2 I would go 50 miles out of my way to completely avoid the Phoenix area. You will still have to go through Tucson which is also bad but to avoid I40 you do not have much of a choice. I also recommend avoiding I40 in Arizona as going cross country in the desert is about as good as I40 that is how bad the road condition is on I40 in Arizona.

RE: 5th wheel hitch or gooseneck for new 5er

Suggest you take a careful look at the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package - Single Jaw - 27,000 lbs.
If you look at how the head is attached to the base you will not see the tall vertical posts that B&W uses.

Does it have the head pivot point several inched below the kingpin connection like the Chinese Made CURT does that is known for causing chucking?
Where is that REESE made?
If you took the time to lookup the Reese hitch you would find the pivot point is virtually in line with the king pin.

RE: Possible short ? A/C affecting 12V lights

If your lights are LED then it may be radio frequency noise. I had a neighbor that had a Honda 2000i generator that had a problem and my LED lights would not work when his generator was running.

RE: Stolen Catalytic Converter

Putting a vin number or any other type of ID on a converter is a waste of time as previously stated. If they have the ability to remove the converter they have the ability to remove any such markings.
Until we as a society are willing to convict and put thieves in jail for lengthy periods of time for stealing catalytic converters, jewelry, high end clothing, and appliances it will not stop in the near future.
There should be stiff penalties for anyone who accepts a stolen converter. But one problem we have is our open border when they can transport the converters to Mexico.

RE: Rivian Electric Truck takes on the Ike Gauntlet

Yes in 2020 there was a few rolling blackouts in a limited area due to a natural gas plant dropping off line unexpectedly during unusually high demand. That was the first in about 20 years since the last time during the screwball Enron days.
I understand much of the imports are hydro from the north.
When power is imported you can not designate what source it comes from. all sources are connected to the same grid.
Hydro power only accounts for 7.3% of power generated in the USA. I suspect the northern states use all of their own hydro.
Fossil fuel accounts for about 60% of power generated in USA and Nuclear 20%.

RE: Rivian Electric Truck takes on the Ike Gauntlet

Last year there were areas in CA that people were asked to not charge their electric cars due to a shortage of electricity. Yea OK so CA has been asking people to conserve energy in the afternoon since at least the 1960s.
Normal and ordinary. EVERY utility has this issue as a natural use daily cycle.
http://www.caiso.com/TodaysOutlook/Pages/default.aspx
Lack of generating capacity is actually quite rare in CA.
Also note that coal is 0.1% in CA.
While there may be only 0.1% of California is from coal. That is only plants in California. California imports 30.8% of its power needs. Where do you think most of that power comes from and how it is generated?
I suspect a large percentage is from coal powered plants outside of California.
Lack of generating capacity in Ca is rare? In August of 2020 Ca issued a rolling blackout plus the fact Ca imports 30.8% of its power I would conclude Ca has a serious power capacity problem.

Does anyone know how many kWh's was needed to go the 8 miles up the hill?
I thought they said 135 kWh. But that may be what they used on the trip from Boulder.

If you have never had the Equa-flex take grease Schomer is on the right track. When I installed my wet bolts I also had several that were not drilled all the way through.

If I offered to sell you an insurance policy that would cover your injector pump and injectors unconditionally for $20 would you buy it?
If you would then dump the 5 gallons of diesel fuel.

RE: Tire Failure

I just had to replace my trailer tires (Maxxis). Had a tread separation that my TPMS did warn me with a drop in pressure from 80 psi to 65 psi.
I had already decided my next set of tires would be good Year Endurance.
I was just south of Salt Lake city. It was a Sunday so I checked in to an RV park and started looking for tires early Monday Morning. Called Big O to see if they had any Endurance tires. They checked their warehouse and all local Big O stores with no luck. Then checked with a Good Year dealer and they could not find a set of Endurance in any of their local dealers and their warehouses in Salt Lake, Denver and Reno.
So I called a Discount Tire which was less than a mile from the RV court I was in. They said they had 29 Endurance tires so I corrected him said you now have 25 tires. They installed a new set in less than 1 hour and I was back on the road before 11:00 am.
