RE: What TPMS should do...

Thanks Kip....I'm looking into this one

RE: What TPMS should do...

Nope, all were serviced under 6000 miles ago. Other two wheels went another 15,000 before service. Not my first rodeo. I'm kind of OCD about maintenance.

RE: What TPMS should do...

Maybe you have a defective unit I spoke to the engineers there and they said that it would not detect if a tire fell of. "That wasn't a design parameter" ???$#@%^%$ They did replace the main unit once for another issue and it does the same thing. And I don't like how it cycles from tire to tire or you need to index it manually. I'd like to find one that shows tire pressure and temp for all the tires all the time, without cycling through... Know of any that offer that?

RE: What TPMS should do...

I had driven cross counry to Oakland CA. I stayed at a campground up in the hills that had a 12% grade for a mile or so when you departed the campground. Engine brake on the diesel and trailer brakes were used to slow me down. We surmise that somehow, that brake jammed on either there or somewhere between Oakland CA and Bakersfield CA. The trailer fabricators suggested that the brake "shorted".....We really have no idea. We were surprised the wheel didn't come off or start a fire! That was one hell of a trip....And It didn't get better from there!!!!! Two blown universal joints, rubber alligator I hit in the middle of the night destroyed the radiator fan and then the brand new transmission I just had installed two months earlier started leaking....All of this happened in three days!!!!

RE: What TPMS should do...

I can see air temperature difference from one side of the trailer to the other, depending on direction of the sun and my travel direction. Black tires can get 10 degrees or more hotter when facing the sun verse being on the shade side.

RE: What TPMS should do...

On the one I have you can set temperature parameters. Other than this one time, I've not had any heat issues so I don't know if there is an audible warning or not. Actually, I think the unit I have is real crappy. I can unhook the trailer an an hour later it is still showing me that the trailer is connected and I'm showing tire pressure even if I'm miles from the trailer! A wheel could fall off and there would be no notification! It's a TST brand unit......

RE: What TPMS should do...

NOPE...It doesn't. I had a hub get so hot after a brake wire shorted out that it melted the entire inside of the hub out! And I never got a high temperature warning with the TPMS. My diesel tow truck never skipped a beat. Had no idea it was happening until I pulled in for fuel. Luck would have it I was directly across from a trailer fabrication place in Bakersfield CA! Needed a whole new axle with new hubs. https://images56.fotki.com/v1664/photos/2/36012/13805932/IMG_20180312_150320008-vi.jpg https://images46.fotki.com/v1660/photos/2/36012/13805932/IMG_20180312_152947082-vi.jpg https://images45.fotki.com/v1636/photos/2/36012/13805932/IMG_20180312_152952636-vi.jpg

RE: What TPMS should do...

I believe all TPMS units do “tire” temperature. I’m asking why they don’t offer “Hub” temperature. Lots of folks have more issues with hubs than tires. And an early warning that a hub is overheating just might save the day.

What TPMS should do...

Have an option to add temp sensors to the hubs. I wonder is shader valves on the grease caps would send hub temperature using the tire pressure caps?

RE: 2018 RAM 6.4L Farkles and D vs G

Believe me, I think about doing a trade back to diesel often.....But then I see 70 cent difference in diesel over gas and only 2mpg difference in towing MPG and about $20,000 to trade currently......If the stock market gets back to where it was, I just might jump next year....

RE: Tow Vehicle Battery and Alternator

LC Terminal = ???? We have no idea what this is for. Even Will Prowse couldn't understand the need. One of these days I'm going to call RENOGY to find out. Will Prowse Video There is a fuse with a plastic cover that I had in my junk box from back in the day when I installed high end car audio systems. I cut a hole in the plastic cover and mounted a simple SPST illuminated switch. This switch could be mounted anywhere.....

RE: Tow Vehicle Battery and Alternator

BTW...These photos do not show a quick disconnect on the 12v+ lead that is feeding the on/off switch. In this configuration, no wire is needed from the licence plate wire.

RE: Tow Vehicle Battery and Alternator

Actually, I use one Renogy DC to DC charger between the two vehicles. Using ANDERSON high current connectors, I can swap the unit back and forth. I installed an ON / OFF switch right on the charger so I can shut it off when not needed. I run the DC control wire from my licence plate light wiring. In this way, when the lights are on, the DC to DC charger is on. And I don't need to run another wire from the front of the vehicle. https://images34.fotki.com/v1522/photos/2/36012/16236905/IMG_20200226_093612803-vi.jpg https://images52.fotki.com/v1639/photos/2/36012/16236905/IMG_20200226_093621578-vi.jpg https://images44.fotki.com/v447/photos/2/36012/16236905/IMG_20200226_093649101-vi.jpg https://images49.fotki.com/v120/photos/2/36012/16236905/IMG_20200226_093654756-vi.jpg Battery Connection at tow vehicle https://images44.fotki.com/v1405/photos/2/36012/16236905/IMG_20200121_130508493-vi.jpg

RE: Any Return on Investment?

Btw, I recently went to replace brakes on my motorcycle trailer. It turned out replacing the entire hub assembly was only a few dollars more than just the brakes. New brake pads, springs, adjusters, etc....much easier install also. And Yes, doing this work would matter greatly if I was buying your trailer. But only if I felt a DIYer knew what they were doing.

RE: 2018 RAM 6.4L Farkles and D vs G

Regrets...I have Few...but too few to mention... Do I miss my diesel...yes, Everytime I'm towing and meet a relatively big hill. But other than that, I'm loving this truck. Especially when I hear the issues my friends are having with newer diesels. Only have 40k miles on it so far. We shall see....

RE: Tow Vehicle Battery and Alternator

I have two tow vehicles, RAM 2500 with 220a alternator and Toyota Venza with 150a alternator. I use a Renogy 40a DC to DC charger in both for charging batteries in a small off-road tent camper or a large toy hauler. Both vehicles have 2g wire from front battery to charger in rear. The Renogy works way above my expectations. Amazing product. I've been experimenting using my vehicle to idle and charge the battery. After 20 minutes charging I'm seeing very little heat rise on either alternator.using laser thermometer. And with a AGM group 31, 100ah, 60% battery, I'm back up to 90% after 20 minutes. I no longer carry a bulky generator to off grid charge batteries when the sun isn't hitting my solar panels. Do a Search on YouTube for Will Prowse. He is amazing and has done a great test on this Renogy unit.

RE: Tow Vehicle Battery and Alternator

I ordered the Renogy 40A version to charge my portable battery box I just built for my Roof Top Tent....and to charge the trailer batteries when I'm pulling that unit. These DC to DC chargers are really neat...Lots more control and safety for your alternator and your batteries that a simple solenoid like we used to do. With my 2018 RAM I understand that a simple solenoid setup will confuse the computer controlled alternator but these DC to DC chargers are fine.... We shall see! You can see my Portable Battery and RTT solar here: www.rvbprecision.com

RE: Tow Vehicle Battery and Alternator

Well...Learn something new every day.....Looking at Renogy Install Manual "When selecting a location for the DCDC, make sure that the unit is as close as possible to the battery you will be charging (auxiliary battery). " I had read on a few other sites to put it close to the main battery.....Don't trust everything you read on the internet.. :-)

RE: Tow Vehicle Battery and Alternator

Looks like there is loads of miss information on this thread....About hooking a DC to DC directly to the Alternator....NO About mounting the DC to DC at the trailer... I don't think so Check out this excellent video of realtime testing of Renogy DC to DC https://youtu.be/EcVjPap9dkY https://youtu.be/EcVjPap9dkY
