RE: Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

Then you start having issues Biggest issue is the propane refrigerator. Can not be more than 3-4% off level or it will be damaged over time... As far as digging down to level.....Every place I've ever camped frowns upon that...and it would be difficult in a highway rest area....:)

RE: Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

Just trumping here now; Mount a pin to the frame so it sticks out centered between tires. Eye on top of jack, (thinking of something like a bottle shaped screw jack that came with light-duty Ford trucks from at least mid '60s to mid'80s) Then make a wedged shaped heavy duty pan that fit between tires, below jack when hanging on pin. Tighten jack would lock and lift. Interesting idea! Thanks...

RE: Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

BTW, have you checked the TW since you lifted the trailer? Or did you lift the ball as much? I reconfigured the entire hitch dynamics once I raised the trailer. Had to raise the ball nearly 5" and readjusted the load equalizing bars so there is nearly no sag in the back of the truck. The truck is a RAM 2500 with 3300# payload capacity.

RE: Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

But how much lift articulation are you really going to get and how much trouble is that worth, as opposed to putting out boards or an Anderson leveler? I have the the red plastic, under wheel, wedge type levelers....a great solution, but a pain when they are covered with mud and need to be deployed and undeployed and stored etc...Plus where I usually camp, I need to also bring a couple plywood boards so they don't sink into the ground. And a few trips in and out of the truck to check level if I'm alone. They give me about 3.5" of lift. I placed a bottle jack between the frame and the spring perch on my trailer and I can get just about the sale lift with this method. Nothing to touch, nothing to store, nothing on the ground..... And I realized I really only need one axle to be manipulated....You don't have to do both. But stability improves if you do both. Now, If there was a way for the lift mechanism to push against the top of the tires, rather than the axle, this would REALLY stabilize the trailer from rocking, just like those devices you install between the two wheels!

RE: Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

I would expect they would be commonly in use but they aren't. I'm sure it has to do with cost more than anything else. Most trailers (caravans they are called down under) from Australia have this feature and there are three or four aftermarket companies that will convert your leaf springs to air. YouTube is full of videos on it. But at $4K to $6K it is too expensive for a simple $30K travel trailer...

TT with its own motors!

How about a TT with two electric motors to help with the towing? And at the campsite, it can unhitch and back itself into the camping spot! Designed to be used with electric vehicles, but has applications for petro powered vehicles too....

This last post sounded a bit rude....I didn't mean it to sound like that. Just trying to explain a bit better at what I'm trying to accomplish....Sorry... :-(

RE: Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

but I don't see them helping with side to side leveling like you initially asked. Really, Having the ability to raise one side or the other with a device between the chassis and the axles is difficult to comprehend? It's EXACTLY the same thing as driving up on some boards to level the RV side to side.....

RE: Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

I bought the Hitch Weight Scale form E-Trailer. Without the 700# motorcycle, the hitch weight is 1500#.....With the bike it goes down to 1200#....40g water is at the axles so very little difference on hitch weight. Trailer dry is 4400#.....(I have 2 group 31 AGM batteries with associated wiring, battery box, circuit breakers, Inverter, etc and two 20# propane tanks on the hitch) Not trying to fix anything....Trailer tows and handles fine. It has over 60,000 miles on it. Three times from Massachusetts to AZ, once from Ma to Oakland CA, a couple times to east Texas and a bunch of 2500 mile round trips....The whole point is to have quick and easy side-to-side leveling.....Now if airbags or airshocks give me some type of added benefit, that's a good thing....

RE: Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

A few additional comments to my original post.... The trailer I have is a Forest River 19RR TOY HAULER.....The load varies immensely...with water and motorcycle, upwards of 1000# +/-....The triler has a payload rating of somewhere around 3000#... I've already replaced the equalizer with Dexter EZ-Flex equalizers and all wet bolts with bronze bushings ....HUGE IMPROVEMENT! This trailer has already broken two leaf springs. And both times with no motorcycle aboard. I'm convinced the factory springs were not rated properly. Three weeks ago I replaced all the springs, brakes, bearings and races....and welded on new spring perches and flipped the axle to below the springs, giving me more room for my airbags/air shocks. With both devices I can simply run them at 10psi and they will have no effect on the original suspension. And using them to quickly level the trailer at a rest stop for an overnight would be a tremendous benefit. This trailer already has a heavy duty Vair compressor and 5 gallon air tank so the issue of "air" is no issue. Still need to decide on air shocks or air bags......I'm absolutely going to do one or the other.

Air Shocks or Air Bags on TT

Thinking about adding airbags or air shocks on my travel trailer to improve the ride and to allow very easy side to side leveling. Thoughts?

RE: Need tires..Shortage..Help!

Yes, I've tried Walmart and every other online retailer. I called dozens of local dealers. A good friend of mine owns a large tire store where I buy all my tires. He told me there is a massive, world wide rubber shortage and GY isn't even producing trailer tires at this time. I just found and ordered a set of 225 Endurance from a dealer in Dallas on Ebay. Free shipping to Massachusetts. It says he has one set left. Fingers crossed!
