RE: Campground near Monticello, Iowa

If you can drive about 10 miles further, I found this: Cascade Riverview Ridge.

RE: Change Cell companies

That's really SOP for changing carriers. Giving them the PIN lets Verizon know that you authorized the change and T-Mobile isn't doing it on their own. Nothing nefarious going on here. No carrier can risk taking a hit to their image by doing something wrong when they transfer thousands of phone numbers daily.

RE: Battery tender & storage

My advice is to disconnect the negative battery cable. I do that with my car, and 6 months later it starts right up.
Pretty amazing that it starts right up with the negative battery cable disconnected! ;)

RE: Extended trip planning

Maybe the boom will taper off when the pandemic newbs find out that it is not quite as seen on TV & they will be on to the next fad thing.
Nice thought, but the problem with this is that when the newbs give up they aren't going to just drive their RVs to the scrapyard and have them crushed, they will sell them. So the same number of RVs, just different owners.

RE: Flying J / RV Lanes

My experience is that the website does not usually list the RV lanes. The app does show them because I setup my user profile as RV.

RE: mb diesel oil mistake

Sprinters just sip DEF. MB estimates the standard 4.9 gal tank is good for 10,000 miles. DEF warning light comes un when half empty, so driver had 5,000 miles to figure out what the warning light means. I don't know about limp mode, but I really doubt anybody gets that far. Probably just get it filled at the 10,000 mile service.

RE: Rear/ bunk ladder

After 30 years in the sun it's possible the plastic has gotten dried out and too brittle to flex at all. Keep trying, but don't be too disappointed if it breaks, because that might be the only way anyway. There's always heavy duty velcro to hold it in place.

RE: RV Fuel Issues & Prices - Post 'Em Here!

I always quit there and move on. If they don't trust me more than that I am not going to make any extra effort either.
Because driving to another station to finish topping off is far easier than swiping another credit card in the reader... ;)

It seems to me that before making any serious decision related to your current situation.
Since this thread is more than 4 years old, I seriously doubt that this "current situation" is really a current situation...

RE: Locking gas cap

I also use locking gas caps on 3 trucks, but they are easy to break off with a screwdriver. YouTube post many videos of how to do this and it works in less than a minute. Not too noisy unless they also use a hammer. I have done it when lost a key.
Not only is it easy, but they couldn't care less about how much paint damage the do taking it off. Cheaper in the long run to just let them take the gas.

RE: Books on disk

I use a USB CD drive on my computer, but I don't believe you will be able to plug it directly into the USB port on your truck. Well, you can plug it in, but it won't do anything. It requires drivers and software to play.
My wife is legally blind, and lives off of audiobooks. I used the computer's built-in software to convert all her existing CDs to MP3 files. Your computer will just look at them as any audio or music CD. I then loaded them all on an iPod, I think 128GB. Plenty of room. She also uses a lot of audiobooks from the library, probably 3 or 4 a week. They are all loaded over the internet directly to the iPod. I can either keep the files on the iPod, or delete them. Since there's plenty of room I just keep the files on there. They expire in 3 weeks, but she frequently checks the books out again months later to listen to again and they don't need to be downloaded again, they are just activated for another 3-week period.
The iPod uses the same OS as an iPhone, so it can connect to your truck through bluetooth or a a USB cable and play through your truck's audio system. (She normally just listens with her earbuds since we have different tastes.)
I also have a lot of old time radio broadcasts loaded on her iPod. About 500 Gunsmoke, all of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater, various others she likes, mostly westerns like Hopalong Cassidy, all episodes of Jimmy Stewart in the Shooter, etc. It works for us, and she never runs out of stuff to listen to.

Agreed. The quality of the journalism was sad indeed.
The comments show far more intelligence and truly address some of the issues and the irresponsibility of the campers causing this problem.

RE: On demand water heater and boondocking

^^^^^ Is catching the waisted water supposed to be an improvement to the typical tank water heater?
Should I upgrade my 10 gallon heater and get a tankless so that I can catch the waisted cold water.
Tankless water heaters in an RV are not very well thought out.
There were designed by someone not logistically familiar with RV'ing.
Tankless heaters are a great option for a stix and brix home but they are not a good idea for an RV.
I guess "waisted" water is water that you wear around your waist?
As Wildtoad pointed out, the water in the line between the water heater (regardless of the type) and the faucet will be unheated. So, yes, catching WASTED water is always a good idea when boondocking, regardless of water heater type.

RE: On demand water heater and boondocking

Many people keep gallon jugs in the kitchen and shower to catch the cold water, then use it to flush the toilet, etc.

RE: Hats

The older I get, the less I care what other people do. I don't even notice things like that anymore. Life is much happier when you don't allow yourself to be offended or bothered by other people.
Who said anything about being offended? It's just an observation. Some of us were brought up with old-school manners and just find how casual and at times disrespectful society has become very frustrating. A trip backwards in time when respect ruled due to some "rules" wouldn't hurt.
I never wear hats myself, so you really don't have to worry about me spoiling your restaurant experience.
But things sure don't bother me as much as they do some other people. Societal mores (pronounced morays) change. I choose not to live my whole life in the past. I'm almost 70, but I really try hard not to act like an old person.

RE: Hats

I wonder why anyone would think wearing a hat inside is rude , What is the difference . I would think that we have enough to fret about without looking for more .It's called manners, and social graces, like not belching in public, eating with your mouth open, holding a door open for someone, saying "Please and Thank You", just part of what makes a civilization civilized.
While I really don't care, I have always thought the wearing hats indoors thing is completely arbitrary and very silly. Someone somewhere decided that wearing this particular piece of clothing inside is not appropriate, but any other article of clothing is OK. But even a hat is OK if it's a particular type of woman's hat. Again, completely arbitrary and makes no sense.
On the other hand, belching in public, or releasing gas from any bodily orifice is pretty offensive and that rule makes sense. :)
