RE: Is Playa del Carmen and Majahual safe

Possibly instead of cash on his person, make sure he has an ATM card and funds available. He should have a great time. Buses go everywhere and are affordable.

RE: Earthquake!!!

Pretty interesting, isn't it??? We were sitting having lunch when it hit, and the first thing we said to each other was, "What are the odds?" And it's a big one!!

Earthquake!!!

Yesterday's 7.7 earthquake on the coast of Michoacan between Tecpan and Lazaro Cardenas was really felt here in Zihuatanejo. Fortunately there was no damage here and reports make it appear as though there wasn't much serious damage.
No road condition information has been available yet, but there is bound to be damage on the coast road. Bridge approaches and exits are bound to be rough, and there have to be slides along the way. Fortunately, these things are taken care of quickly. It would be great to get a report on the road conditions.

RE: Dying in Mexico

Is OP saying a certified copy of a death certificate or birth certificate issued by a California county will not be honored by Mexico? The only birth certificates issued by the State of California are for adopted children. Otherwise the counties issue these documents.
Again, it depends upon what you are trying to do. I don't see why anyone would need a death certificate from the US here. Birth certificates are issued, in most cases, by counties, but only the state does the apostille. Here in Mexico they want things apostilled. For residency purposes, if you do your application in the US, they will take a birth certificate that is not apostilled. If, however, you do it here in Mexico, it must be apostilled.
In our cases, the birth certificates that we used to get our passports with 50 years ago were considered to be too old by California and Oregon, so we had to get more current birth certificates from the counties then send them to the state.
We are fortunate that we have the time for this. We have found how easy it is to get a US notarization on line and free on line FAX services too.

RE: Dying in Mexico

That is a great thing to hear. Supposedly, and we know how that works in ANY country, things are very official.
So glad that things worked out the way they were "supposed" to happen. May they continue.

RE: Dying in Mexico

That was exactly what we had decided while we still lived in the US and traveled down here regularly.
Now? Cremation and into the ocean! At least with our apostille marriage certificate, if we don't go together in a firey crash, the other can take care of things.

It just depends. Read the fine print as to where the use may be needed.

Dying in Mexico

Yeah, I know, what a topic, but it needs to be out there.
In years past we were always told that in a decent sized caravan to Mexico, there would be at least one death. Tequila, what do you say??
We have recently found out that in order to have a spouses remains released to you in Mexico, you need to have a marriage license/certificate on hand. Not only that, it needs to be an apostille copy. These take a bit of work to get, and are issued through the Secretary of State in the state where you were married, in most cases.
We decided that since we have to get apostille birth certificates and marriage certificate to apply for citizenship, it made sense to have a second apostille marriage certificate for when one of us passes.
If nothing else, it will make a difficult time a bit less stressful.

RE: Vehicle Insurance for Mexico

Not that we are aware of. Fortunately it's not particularly expensive.
Just as a note of caution, we were parked in Mazatlan at the old La Posta RV park helping the guy behind us get all loaded up for his return to Canada after being parked for 5 months. He didn't keep insurance on his rig while parked for the winter, and had it starting the next day. Yup, we really did see his vehicle roll across the road and hit another one. Did quite a bit of damage to both, fiberglass front ends and all, and him with no insurance.

RE: Winter 2022/2023 trip plans changed!

Maybe you can just fly to Florida for the event, and still have some time and money left for a Baja trip.
When we relocated to Mexico permanently our families got told that we welcomed them to come stay for up to a week, we have a separate apartment at the house, but that we wouldn't be returning to the US for visits. Some thought it cruel, but it's realistic for us. Five years later, two friends come annually to visit, not a single family member!

RE: RV's in Zihuatanejo

OK, I'm missing something. Maybe things are different other places in Mexico. I just checked our records and the price of gas here in Zihuatanejo has only varied 2.1 pesos over the last 5 years. Up and down. Currently it is 22.1 for a liter of regular. That is way cheaper than California.

RE: RV's in Zihuatanejo

El Manglar RV park in Zihuatanejo is still a great place. Same owners, different manager, same great condition and location. I suspect it will fill up fast this year and stay that way.
Gas prices here in Mexico haven't changed significantly in years. California??? We are watching where we used to live and the cheap gas station, cash only, was up to $6.70 per gallon for regular yesterday.

RE: Hurricane season is here

Here in Zihuatanejo things have been pretty much normal except for the ocean conditions.
Starting in January we had weeks of red tide, murky water that was cold. It finally became warm and clear again mid-May.
We had our first rain May 29, .16 inches and again last night, .95 inches. We are out of the area being affected by Agatha, fortunately.

RE: Best route

We went to check on plates this morning, and were told sometime after May 15. I read somewhere that they gave all of us a July 31 date before we need to worry about not having plates.
We live next door to LOOT, so you drive by us regularly. You probably see us paddling and swimming most mornings, too.

RE: Best route

The plates for your vehicle???? IF you have Mexico driver's licenses and the paper we printed out on line and the receipt of payment for your new plates, you will be fine.
We never had to show our driver's licenses, but felt very confident with them in hand!
