RE: 6 or 12 That is the question

Generally pack as many amp hours as you have space to put them. Typically RV builders don't allow much space for the battery bank. Enough room for 2 group 27 12V or 2 group 31s if you are extremely lucky. A third option is to have a single 4D battery which will give more than 200 amp hours & simplify wiring. It is not as simple as 6V or 12V. There is use & battery chemistry to consider. Cheapest is not necessarily the best overall. You can get AGM batteries. They cost much more than wet cells, have zero maintenance, are good for deeper discharges, many more discharge cycles, self discharge at half the rate of a wet cell in storage and can have a useable lifespan up to 10 years. The way to go if you want to be prepared for more than a night or two of dry camping. For the typical weekend warrior always on hookups the wet cell bank in one configuration or another is the way to go.

RE: Can I rent your RV?

The answer is NO. Insurance won't cover a commercial transaction. Even if insurance was not an issue the answer is still no for any & all reasons given above.

RE: Connecticut coast - sites to see, places to stay

Having done the CT shore by boat I sure don't recall seeing any shoreside CGs. Loads of multi million dollars homes were seen.

RE: Jacking up 5th wheel?

I use a floor jack and then put 6000# jack stands under the axles I'm working on. You carry a floor jack & jack stands with you on the road??

RE: Maintenance Approved For RV

Some CGs do & some CGs don't let you do anything. I have not come across a CG that has not let me do a minor repair. Just removed the remains of a TV antenna off the roof today at a KOA. Nothing but waves from the people zooming around in the golf carts. As long as you are reasonable most don't seem to mind. Changing oil, engine tune ups, noisey jobs are not reasonable.

RE: Jacking up 5th wheel?

Asking for trouble if you put the jack under the curved U bolt. Put it under the lowest spring leaf next to the axle. A flat surface not prone to slipping. Or you could buy, or make, something like THIS. Lyle With the tire flat how do you get that under the axle? Axle is under the spring on mine & 16" wheels so possibly there is the difference. Also use a 12T bottle jack.

RE: Looking for ideas on how to Roll up/store 50 amp cord

If there is a complex expensive way to deal with something simple someone is sure to suggest it. Cooling the 50amp beast got old real fast so a nautical method of storing awkward line is used. It is flaked into an oval laundry basket. Enough of the female end is left out to reach the inlet. Only as much as needed is pulled out to the utility post. Cheap and effective.

RE: One night stays and black/grey tanks

3-4 days minimum to dump unless there are some serious mountain passes to cross.

RE: US101 Northern California

We went through on Thursday - left the campground (Chinook RV Resort) shortly after 9am and got in line. There were 15 vehicles ahead of us in line, waiting for the road to open at noon. I must say they were prompt: it was exactly 12:00:00 when we started moving! We got through the one-way section and then saw the line waiting to go south: almost 5 miles long! According to the handout we got at the RV Park the road is closed on Monday through Thursday from 8am to noon, and from 3pm to 7pm. All other times it is open to one-way traffic - controlled. You were ahead of us. We departed S of Fortuna about 11 not knowing a thing about any repairs. Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

RE: Consequences of RVing’s Unprecedented Surge

Like many on this forum we have had to adapt. We still seldom make reservations but we now look for someplace for the weekend on Thursday rather than Friday this year. We are seeing an awful lot of obviously very new units with very clean frames out there. How long the fad continues remains to be seen. Availability depends on when & what is wanted.Sunday to Thursday is easy.FHUs on the weekend, near impossible. Adapterbility is the key.

RE: If you can't decide if you want an RV or a boat

At best an RV is a collection of compromises with wheels. At best a boat is a bunch of compromises that float. Combined the result does not do anything well except suck up money.

RE: US101 Northern California

Came through the area a couple days ago. South to north. Got lucky. Minor delay. Currently in Crescent City. Hearing of delays up to 4 hours. We saw SB line that had to be 2 miles long.

RE: Peeling Decals. What to do.

Ya, it is the labour. Took my front cap decal off with a combo hair dryer & chemicals to get glue residue. Took it to the sign maker. One hour later the new decal, a blown up picture that we had taken, was on. Excellent quality material. Four years later it looks like just applied.

RE: I hate roundabouts -- but maybe I am wrong

The US has not gotten the idea of how to build roundabouts yet. Most are way too small & most drivers don't have any clue of how to use them. In England they know how to build them & drivers know how to use them. Generally they are much larger multiple lane affairs. Drivers actually use signal lights to let others know their intentions. The signage is much better too

RE: Colorado Campgrounds

We are currently sitting at the United CG next to the narrow gauge RR 4 miles N of Durango These folks have stepped way out of their way to accommodate us after we showed up with an issue making our 5er very difficult to move. We are on an indefinite layover as we wait for parts. Nice CG with plenty of trees to give shade during current heat. Great views across the valley.
