This could be a DIY job if you are up to the challenge. The beauty of fiberglass is that if you make a mistake you grind it away & start again. It is not a huge mystery though many are afraid of it. I have done many small repairs on boats plus a few to the 5er ranging from little dings all the way to constructing a new top for the boat, a new swim platform & re decking a small boat. For this job I am thinking take the part off for starters & layer up a few layers of heavy structural cloth to provide structural strength behind to start with. From there work on the outside layering a few layers of fine cloth finishing with fairing putty. It is all about the preparation before the first coat of paint goes on.

Fiberglass work is a messy time consuming job. Get the grinder out. It will be multiple layers. No such thing as the 5 minute fix.

One more thing to find a place to store it. Don't dump if you don't need to. We can go a week no problem but usually dump every 3 or 4 days or depending on availability of a dump. No big deal to hold the hose up & let gravity do it's thing.

Dunno about keeping it cool but keeping it dry is not a bad idea. A small dehumidifier should do it. Need to devise a way to drain it. Perhaps put it on counter & drain into the sink.

RE: Colorado Hwy 50 @ Monarch Pass

Lived in Colorado for 30 years. I've done it with 29ft 5er and Ram 2500 5.9 CTD. No problem. Had no exhaust brake but put it in 2nd on cruise at 30mph. Let it slowly speed up to about 50 then braked hard until back to 30. Repeat. Saw me fine over that pass doing this. Also going down Wolf Creek Pass but with boat added behind the 5er. Similarly on Vail Pass. Just take it slow and careful and you will be fine. I found Monarch to be the easiest of the three. Been over about every major CO pass with my 12,000-13,000lb, depending on water load, 5er. The low gear, let it speed up, brake hard to slow right down, let it speed up while brakes cool, brake hard method works. Only had smoking brakes a few times. Slumgullion Pass into Lake City was one occasion. Nasty pass that one.

RE: County Park Experiences

County parks are just another in the accommodation for RVers bag of tricks. County & town parks can work out well. Some not so well. Getting reviews on them not so easy as fewer people use them. Another not so well known place of refuge are the fairgrounds, mostly county, but state too, all over. Basic, inexpensive & available as long as nothing big is happening.

Been doing it for years. Basically it is using the roads that were the primary highways before the interstate system was built. There are many. Not just rt66. Rts 2,36,50,40,1,301 just to name a few.

Determine what you will use it for. 36' is not going into many places.40' is not going into many more places. Smaller is better. Then there is the question of how small? Too small on a multi month trip is not going to work. Thoroughly do the research before going to a dealer. Buy what you need, not what some salesman has in stock to sell to you. Buying a mistake is expensive. We were years researching & months searching for a model on the very short list. 15 years later we still have it.

Love his music but those are not my style & not my budget. On the rare occasion we might do $50 but have no use for the pools or the Disney 'perfect' CGs with their 'carpark' layouts for so called camping. I'm sure that they will do well though.

When people moan that they can't get a site I always feel that we are only getting half the story. What they are not saying is that they want specific sites, usually FHUs, and high demand locations and dates. They are not flexible. Don't suggest dry camping. We made reservations yesterday for this weekend. A huge holiday weekend in Canada No FHU. No problem. No water view. No problem. No water at site. No problem. Far from bathrooms. No problem. No satellite access. No problem. Only 30amp power. No problem. Back in. No problem. When you are adaptable there is seldom a problem. .

We are over two months into a six month trip & so far availability without reservations has been very easy. Currently on fourth night of what was expected to be a high demand CG in Newfoundland at the height of the iceberg season. It has never been over 50% capacity. Nothing but Canadian tags seen.

In the boating world we say that a boat can be any colour, as long as it is white. Dark coloured gelcoat does not do well with sun. Once it has been let go it takes alot of work to bring it back. It also needs to be done much more frequently to keep it looking good. Looking at your current state it is not as bad as when you started. A good going over with a cleaner wax, such as 3M cleaner wax, followed by the Meguires Flagship wax again should restore to the condition of your first highly successful efforts. I have had saltwater kept boats since 1981. A tough environment to be in. There are many great products out there these days but time & sun will always destroy them without regular attention. I appreciate the advice, but the second time around took a surprising amount of work to get it looking good, felt like should have stripped it first since the previous wax was gumming up my pads. I ended up going to the full rotary buffer and even then I was struggling. I am not about to put the same product on it that never went through a full NorCal summer and looked terrible in 6 months. Maybe I got a bad batch? I dont know, but you know how the saying goes, fool me once... The Flagship is most definitely not a cleaner wax. Applied over chalking or a degraded surface is going to leave a less than clear deep shine. My 5er is a late 2007. It is indoor stored in the winter but is outdoors & traveling about 160 days each year. That is an awful lot of bugs getting smashed into the front cap. After all these years & miles I can't say that the front cap looks new when I am finished with it, using the 3M marine cleaner wax followed right behind with the Flagship, but it looks darned close to new.

Why all the concern about having internet? Think back a few years ago when we traveled before the internet was available, now it seems people freak out if they go a day or two without it. My feeling is, if you have internet once a week or so to keep in touch that should be enough. Enjoy the trip and relax. My feelings exactly. We are boarding the ferry to Newfoundland tomorrow where phone service can be just as sketchy a the NW provinces & Alaska. We touch base whenever we can but nobody panics when we disappear for a few days. How did anyone survive a remote road trip before the cellphone?

We are about 60 days & 3500 miles into a MD to Newfoundland trip. So far really easy as far as campground availability goes. The only big surprise has been space availability on ferries. Tough. Did not make reservations for the ferry from PEI back to mainland figuring midday, midweek, no problem. They just squeezed us on. A couple of days ago tried to make reservations for the 7 hour ferry from Sydney to Newfoundland for tomorrow. Based on experience 6 years ago figured no problem with a midweek trip. No way. Booked solid. This is a BIG ship. Got lucky with space Wednesday so we sit doing nothing for a couple of days. No idea how busy CGs will be in NL. No reservations. No set in stone itinerary estimating more than a month being on the island. We watched a caravan of 20 plus class As depart here last evening to catch the overnight ferry. Don't suppose they stay at places we do. So far it has been more or less situation normal for our style of very few reservations wherever we go though we have called ahead a few times on the day needed.

Yesterday diesel was $2.13lit. Today it is $2.22 in PEI. Should have bought yesterday. $300CDN today & that did not fill it. Newfoundland next week. Scary to think what it is going to be. Last time near $300 was put into the truck was Dawson City, YT. in 2018, & that was a fill of both almost flat empty tanks. Must be tough on those who live in the areas where prices are high & distances are great. Little crossover SUVs must be looking awfully attractive. I figure near $1 per mile with my 3500.

it has been two weeks since the OP. i hope all is well. One of the beauties of a trip north is the enforced disconnect from the rest of the world, sometimes for days at a time.Sometimes no cell service, no OTA TV, no radio even. It's great! The world continues to spin without you being connected.

Basically you can do Alaska either in a clockwise direction or an anti clockwise direction. besides a few side roads there really are very few choices to make. Same with getting there & coming back. You can do the Alaska Hwy up & the Cassiar back or do it the other way round. As far as speed goes, well, it depends. You can get very long stretches where 50mph can be done quite comfortably. Alaskan highways are very good & often 60mph can be the norm. You can also get stretches where work is being done & a convoy leader will take you through. No telling what speeds will be for those sections. Sometimes the wait is long enough to get out & get to know who is infront & who is behind you. If you think that you can blast through & do in three weeks what needs months, think again. Alaska is not that big. Canada is. Canada is much bigger than most think. Canada also has some of the best sights to see. Also, those side trips to places like Seward, Homer, Wittier, Haines, Hyder & others, take time

Your worst enemy is going to be chafe. Add an extra layer on corners by taping folded terry towel over the corners to protect from the rubbing.
