RE: Replacing solid steps with folding steps

Lyle..easy way is to just google rv.net photo posting. It will direct you to the site, and you just need to follow directions to add your photo. It will do all else for you sizing etc. Copy what they show, and paste in your post. I keep the photo post book marked, so always ready when needed. Jerry Thanks, Jerry. Won't have a chance until next week. Too much "life" going on. Lyle

RE: Replacing solid steps with folding steps

Here's the link to my review: https://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/30389555.cfm Still working on getting pics posted. Lyle Well Lyle, as you can see, no one has posted on your review?? I think reason being...without any pics, how do we know you even added the new steps? :@ You do know how easy it is to post pics , using rv.net photo posting? Jerry Actually, I spent nearly an hour using the search feature to find out how to do it, but could find nothing, not even a sticky anywhere. Can you please give me a hint? I'll be happy to do so. Thanks, Lyle

Torklift Glowstep Revolution Review

A while back, I was gifted a set of Torklift Glowstep Revolution steps to replace the factory under-frame folding steps. I finally had time a couple weekends back to do the swap. Thank goodness that I have a great, and strong, son-in-law to help me out. These are model #A8003, with 3 steps. The adjustable legs give about 6-7” of adjustment. The installation was very easy. 4 bolts hold the steps in place. Removed the 4 old bolts, removed the old steps, slid the Glowsteps into place, put the new bolts in, snugged them, made some small adjustments to make sure the Glowsteps were square and tightened everything down. It did take some muscle and finagling, but it wasn’t bad, at all. The mounting brackets only have about 1” of alignment space to allow you to make sure the steps are square and even with the edge of the door sill, so it went quickly. Once they were installed, however, I found that these steps had an issue. During the build, the locking piece on the right side (as you’re looking at them) was very slightly bent and would hit the step frame, and not allow the steps to re-lock into the transport position. We had to bend that piece out as best we could and it now has =just= enough clearance so that the steps will fold and lock properly. Not a huge problem but, IMO, something that clearly slipped past QC. The only other issue I have is that I’m pretty sure I gave wrong measurements on the height and I should have gotten the 4-step model instead of the 3. We did the install on the concrete apron of my shop and had to add a 2x4 and a piece of ¾” plywood scrap under the adjustment legs to bring the steps up to level. The owner’s manual says that a step can be added, so I am in the process of acquiring and adding another step to correct this. Just frustrating to know that I’m the likely culprit for this issue. Once I had the blocks under the legs, we walked up and down them, in and out of the trailer and, even with NO jacks down, only hitched to my truck, the stability and lack of movement was amazing. Just makes me wish I’d had the chance to install these before. I’d give these steps a 9.5/10 rating and that’s only because of the build issue with the locking piece. The rest of the construction seems to be excellent and the steps very solid with virtually zero flex. Lyle

RE: Firearm storage in maine before Canada

I know that there are places along the Mexican border where you can rent lockers to store "stuff" before you head down. Most require a reservation to do so as they can fill up quickly. Contacting firearms dealers would likely be your best bet to see if they 1) offer fee-based storage or 2) can recommend some place that does. Lyle

RE: Replacing solid steps with folding steps

For what it's worth, I installed the Glowsteps on my current KZ this weekend. I'll be posting a review of them in the next week, or so. So far, I'm 95% pleased with them. Lyle

RE: Replacing solid steps with folding steps

Sorry, I wasn't clear. My '17 KZ has old-style folding steps and I was gifted a set of the Glowstep Revolutions to replace them. We're thinking of upgrading FWs in the next 1-2 years, and I was wondering if anyone has swapped the stupid solid steps out for the old-style folding steps. That's one of my biggest pet peeves about the newer RVs and, IMO, it was totally unresearched by manufacturers to see if =actual RVers= would find them desirable. Again, IMO, LCI and MorRyde started literally giving these things to the manufacturers to promote them in the first couple of years, hence the explosive widespread use of them by all manufacturers. Now, if they'd make them OPTIONAL, I think you'd see how few people really like them. Lyle Almost all newer fifth-wheels have the steps that lift up into the door for storage. If the set of glowsteps you have is made for under door storage, they will not be compatible with most newer trailers. Which I totally understand and asked my original question. Has anyone ever removed the stupid solid steps and replaced them with old-school folding steps? This would mean fabbing a frame, cutting the skirt, etc. Lyle

RE: Axle and tire?

I have a 2006 Montana Mountaineer that has GVWR of 12275lbs but has 6lug 5200lb axles. This doesn't seem right to me but I guess they deduct some for pin weight. It came with Load E tires but I've had blowouts and thinking of going up to load F or G. I'm tired of tire issues and damage. I'm fanatic about tire condition and psi, I'm always on top of it. Last blowout tire was less than 2 years old. I've also had a new set all roll the belts and have to be replaced within a year, probably one trip on them, they bulged out in middle tread. I'm not a GY fan, but put a set of Endurance on my FW. So far, I'm happy, but I did notice that the tread depth is noticeably less than other brands. Given that ST tires rarely wear out, not a huge issue, but if you tow in the wet a lot, you might want to consider something else. I'd love to go to LTs but most places won't install them unless the tires have a load rating that meets or exceeds the placard, so you end up having to take the wheels off, take them to the tire shop for the swap, then put them back on. Replacing solid steps with folding steps

Has anyone done this? I can't find any threads on rv.net about this. I was given a brand new set of Glowstep Revolution steps to install on my older FW, but would gladly take them with me if they'll fit my next FW. Personally, the ONLY good thing about the stupid solid steps is the stability, and the Revolution, among other folding steps, can give you the same without the cons of the stupid solid steps. Lyle

RE: Exterior Stairs

I have a 2012 Carriage Cameo F37RSQ and there are several areas of the entry steps that are compromised. I am holding them together with "band-aids". Has anyone replaced their stairs and what make and model did you use. I am leaning toward a similar type to OEM and not something that folds into the RV. Thanks Look at replacing them with the Glowstep Revolution. Bolt-on installation and have adjustments at the bottom to give the stability of the solid steps. Lyle

RE: Question about double towing

Question after upgrading house instead of buying the 5 th wheel we are now starting to think about a fifth wheel again apologizes if this has been asked before but what are the rules so to speak about towing a Jeep Wrangler behind the 5 th wheel ? I know it varies from state to state but would like some advice thanks As one of the others said, good luck getting out of FL unscathed. If you hit AZ, it is legal to double-tow. Max length is 65' from front bumper to center of rearmost axle of the tow. You =are= allowed up to 10' of "overhang" from center of rearmost axle to furthest aft point, to a max nose-to-tail of 75'. The overhang is mostly for boats with an outboard or stern drive, though some utility trailers can be pretty long. In AZ, the first hitch MUST be a FW. GN to ball is not legal, though the chances of being checked are minimal. Lyle

Awing repair

Daughter and son-in-law picked up a really nice, and well cared for, 1995 Nash 22H travel trailer from my sister-in-law. The awning was replaced about 2 years ago, but was never used until this year. Nick (son-in-law) was maneuvering it and managed to scrape a tree branch and put a couple small holes in the awning, near the front edge. I see a lot of different repair products, but wanted to get opinions from others who may have used one of them. Both good and bad. Thanks, Lyle
