RE: People sure are getting petty with their park reviews

Complaints about sand at coastal parks. Complaints about bugs. Complaints about wild life. Sounds like a lot of people would be better off in a hotel.

RE: Fighting zoning ordinances that hurt RV owners

Use to live in a neighborhood with very strict HOA. At the time we had a pop-up camper which we stored on our property out in the middle of nowhere where we eventually built our home. A couple days before and after a camping trip we would park the camper in the driveway to prep for the trip and then cleanup afterwards. Every time we did this we got letters from the HOA complaining. The person who complained to the HOA owned an ice cream truck that he parked on the road in front of his house 365 days a year. So it was OK for his ice cream truck to sit there every day on the road but not for my camper on the driveway for a couple days before and after a trip. The HOA controlled your property, however, the roads were county roads, so the HOA had no control of the public road where he parked. As long as he could fire up the engine on the ice cream truck when someone complained he was good. So he kept the battery hooked up to shore power 365 days a year to make sure he could crank her up on demand. The guy owned at least one gas station where he could have parked it. He knew the rules and complained about everybody. When my wife moved into that house she got a complaint one day after she moved in about her grass being too high, not a good sign.

RE: Myrtle beach - Lakewood alcohol rule?

iirc, Lakewood is family owned and models itself as a Christian cg so they set the rules accordingly. kinda like ChickfilA. Jesus drank wine. Every state park we have camped out has this rule. The key is to be conceal it and not make it obvious. Don't be an arse and attract attention to yourself.

RE: James Island

We were there for a long weekend last weekend. Roads our bikes throughout entire campground. Wife and I think site 29 is the best. It is a pull thru. Back side of camper has trees between you and neighbor, with good distance between you and them. Front side is also large with a good tree barrier and distance between you and the road. Site is huge length wise. We already booked it for June 2021. Last weekend we were in 75. It flooded. Camper spot was fine, picnic table and fire ring were under water. Flow of water was going to neighbors site but was dammed up, so I cleared the leaves inhibiting the flow and have my neighbor some more water so I could drain faster. :-) Took all day, but MOST of it drained by dinner time. The rain that caused the flood was a good steady rain, but not tropical downpours. There was also poison ivy, so I would inspect any site for that. Site 110 is also good, back in. There are a lot of "shared" sites so beware. Anyway, it is an awesome park and a great location for exploring the area.

RE: Pennsylvania Synchronous Fireflies

They can also be seen at the Congaree National Park in SC which does have boon docking camping. Best viewing here is May 14 - June 14. Too late for this year.

RE: Internet

My work has same requirement. I use this a NETGEAR WiFi Range Extender EX2700 The extender connects to my phone then I plug the laptop into the extender. So yeah, stupid, but it works. Meets the requirement of hardwired to the laptop.

RE: Why are people not opening new campgrounds/RV parks?

We have two newer ones near us. The primary focus for them was for construction workers at a nuclear plant. That project shut down and they are trying to become vacation oriented. When I drive by them them they seem to be busy, so they have succeeded. One is only a couple miles from an interstate so that helps attract over nighters.

RE: Myrtle Beach Problems

The key to MB is not going to Ocean BLVD at night. For the most part it is cheap hotels, cheap entertainment. If you are in an RV camping, no problems at your campground more than likely. Going to the various big name entertainment complexes at night are fine as they are far away from Ocean BLVD. As a SC resident, the closest I would camp to MB in the Summer would be Huntington Beach SP. Away from the chaos but close enough for the entertainment stuff if you desire. It is also VERY close to good restaurants. We only go to Ocean BLVD during the daytime in the WINTER. We enjoy the Skywheel and the Gay Dolphin, but again, only in the Winter.

RE: Myrtle Beach Problems

Many of us who live in SC actually have no use for MB. Growing up in the 60’s, 70’s MB was still a small town, and you could do just about anything you wanted with zero trouble, especially in the off season. Summertime the town ballooned with out-of-towners But we knew they were there to have fun and spend lots of money which the town depended on for survival. Then the local government started to lose control of the town, or perhaps encouraged, to the developers and from there, all was lost. Now as many of you know if you come in on 501, during the summer traffic can back up to Conway, or further back. Some here in SC have been pushing for a new interstate from I think Charlotte to MB which does not have the infrastructure required to absorb it. It would be a good evac route in a storm though. There are plenty of nice areas both above and below MB that are much nicer and if you have a hankering for tourist stores, activities, chain restaurants, they are just a few miles away, and then you can return to some piece and quiet. I live in SC and MB is a tourist trap.

RE: Chipmunks

Squirrels will get rid of chipmunks, get a squirrel. Then get a woodchucks to take care of the squirrels? I took out 22 squirrels with a pellet gun one year. For each one I took out they had 2-3 replacements ready to come in.

RE: Frost free hydrant for potable water

Cheap ones won't last. Had 3 Made in China and they all started having issues within a couple years. One rebuilt and it too started having issues. We have one left working and need to replace another, will go Made in the USA as supposedly they last.

RE: Furrion Backup Camera Quality and Performance

We have one but don't use it for backing up. The wife is the eyes for that. However, I love being able to see what is behind me and making sure the vehicle I am passing is clear before getting back into their lane. I also use it as part of my decision as to pass or not based on what is coming up behind. 4" is fine for my purposes as I don't stare at it at the whole. No lag.

RE: Pa Open for Camping

If people are responsible and smart, it should work. And here lies the problem. SC gets an F for Social Distancing and the few times I have been out it is very obvious why. PA gets a C+.

SC State Parks Plan to Reopen

SC State Parks plan to reopen May 1. They will start limited and expand services as time goes by. Camping and cabins are good to go for May 1 for existing reservations. New reservations can be booked for May 11 and beyond.

RE: Snake Repellent Testing - Advice

When walking in the woods beware of sunny spots shining in thru the trees, they like to sun themselves in such areas. Be a little noisy, they really want to avoid you as much as you want to avoid them. Keep focused on where you are going and doing.

Slide - In or Out

I have noticed driving around that many people have their slides open while camper is not in use. Perhaps they are using them but I don't think so. Curious about opinions on this. I would think it would be better to keep it closed when not using.

RE: Question about having camper setup in near freezing temps.

I tend to think you really don't have to worry. Typically the coldest part of the night is at daybreak. That low will be very short lived.

RE: Camco water filter

Bought a Reliance Products Aqua-Tainer 7 Gallon Rigid Water Container that I fill with water from our house that is used for coffee, drinking and ice. Our trips are usually 4 nights so we don't ever use this much water. Once we dump at the dump station what is left of this water is poured into the toilet so it can slosh around in the black tank on the way home. We use to just use campground water until we stayed at a place in SW VA. I expected good water from the mountains. Nastiest water we had ever had ANYWHERE. The ice ruined sodas. Worse than water near the ocean.

RE: The Coronavirus

When it is your time to go it is your time to go. We were in DC the Spring after 911 with our 3 young boys. When we were there, there was a panic of a chemical attack on the subways. That was pretty much how we got everywhere, took the car out once the entire week. We decided to keep riding the subways. We figured if it was our time to go, oh well. If we cheated death by skipping the subways we figured God would get us back as we traveled home on I-95.
