RE: Ham radios

As a ham myself, I can give you my experience... If you're looking to communicate with someone else along with you, they work great, much better than FRS. However, if you're wanting it for "emergency" communications with the outside world if you don't have cell signal, I don't think it's effective. There just isn't enough people "listening" out there. Sure, some areas are active, but the vast majority of space is pretty dead. Even on the repeaters, I find most places to be quiet. For example, I recently made a trip out west from Dallas, TX to southern CA, AZ, and NM. Over the course of that 4 week trip, I got ZERO responses on the 2M calling frequencey. While driving, I'd call out every hour or so. Usually when I reached a campground, I'd try once. Bottom line, I don't consider it a reliable mode of communication for a personal emergency. I do a lot of hiking, and I'm thinking hard about getting a PLB for a true emergency. AA5RV

RE: where 2 get water for RV before you reach your destination?

I often get water at Flying J's or other truck stops...

RE: Life of AC?

Sounds like the RV shop is trying to sell you a new A/C. I've had several with 10+ years and run fine. Is it tripping the breaker in your trailer, or on the pedestal?

RE: Has anyone added an extra water tank to RV roof

I'd be nervous putting that much weight on the roof. I would try to find somewhere in one of the compartments below and put lawn chairs or something like that on the roof or strapped to the ladder.

RE: Freightliner Odometer

Glad you found it! As I understand it, your true mileage is 38469.9 - you don't add the two...

RE: To buy or not to buy insurance?

Back when I had a trailer, my standard auto policy on the truck covered damage that the trailer CAUSED if I was in an accident while towing. It provided NO coverage for damage to the trailer while it was parked. I picked up an additional policy on the trailer to cover it while it wasn't being towed - hail, fire, flood, etc. If you're in a position where a 30k loss wouldn't hurt, then don't get insurance. If it will make you lose sleep, then get the insurance. Either way, find out exactly what your policy covers, and when it is in effect. Your auto policy agent may tell you "sure, it's covered!", but might be only when being towed, and only for damage to others, leaving you with a pile of pieces.

RE: Freightliner Odometer

The code worked and got me into diagnostics, but I dont have a menu option for odometer anyplace. I found an owners manual online for the Freightliner MMDC but mine doesn’t have all the screens as the one in the owners manual. The literature said Freightliner came out with it in late 2004. May Motorhome is a 2004 and the LCD readout on mine looks different than the one in the manual. I don’t know if I possibly got an earlier version or what is going on with it. Per the manual in the regular menus you are supposed to be able to read the odometer and the tripometer. I only have the tripometer in the regular menus. Guess I’ll try calling the company that made it unless you have any different ideas? I just checked mine, first Service, then diagnosics, then sender, then scroll down a bunch.

RE: Freightliner Odometer

I have a Freightliner chassis and mine has never done that. Hi Jerry, I guess I overstated the "very" part of my post! When my odo changed, I did some searching and found a lot of threads on different forums, even had one going in our Mandalay group! Glad you haven't had the problem. Rob

RE: Freightliner Odometer

This is a very common problem on Freighliners with the MMDC. If you've got the MMDC, go to the "diagnostics" menu, the password is 8127. Scroll down to an item that says "odometer compare" or something like that. It will show you what what is recorded in the ECU and the IP. Most say Freightliner won't do anything about it. Mine odo dropped to about 62k from 115k a few weeks ago. I'm not going to do anything about it except disclose the real number if/when I sell the coach.

RE: Arizona and AC

I just drove through the area yesterday, thermometer said 112 outside. With both A/C's running in a 40' coach, it was still hot. Bottom line, very unlikely that yours will keep you very cool in daytime temps like that even if the entire roof was shaded.

TSD EFS App Problem?

Anyone besides me having trouble with the "price locator" portion of the EFS app? I can log in and see past transactions, but when trying to find a location and price, I get nothing except: "There was a problem getting locations from the server. Please try again." Of course, I tried again, but have not had luck for 2 days now. Anyone else having or had the same problem? Thanks in advance!

RE: Bucket List Item on Ca-58

There's also a Loves and Flying J in Tehachapi that you could drop the trailer for a few hours. The Tehachapi loop isn't far from there.

RE: Converter, is it working

For starters, you can unhook the + lead of the battery, plug in the trailer, and see if the inside lights come on. If they do, your converter is working. If not, it gets a little more complicated depending on how the trailer is wired.

RE: 1994 Award bumper pool- battery help!!

Could be that the battery on the trailer is shot. It reads full when connected to the car because the meter reads the car battery voltage. What does the meter in the trailer indicate when the car is unhooked, generator off, and coach unplugged?

RE: Crack in ball valve

I know the gaskets can be replaced, I've done that a few times. In my parts search for the gaskets, I don't recall ever seeing the ball as an available part. I have to admit, that I was focused on the gaskets, so I could be wrong....

RE: camping in ohio

I guess some people will always think the rules are for everyone else but them.Since you already addressed the OP I'm going to make a WAG and guess you are addressing me. So I'll just put this out there. Where I live there are no rules against camping. There are rules for social distancing, gathering in large groups, etc. I can certainly can do that in a campground provided my neighbors don't come over and insist on invading my space. I agree wholeheartedly that a campground is a good place to be, and if you're not under a stay in place order, then by all means, go camping. However, when the OP started off indicating that there is a stay in place order where THEY are at, your response to have them call the campground seems to imply that the stay in place order over THEM is irrelevant, therefore the rules don't apply to everyone.
