RE: 2+ weeks into Artic Fox 27-5L

Had a Northwoods Nash for my first trailer. Great camper, well built. Hoping they are still around (and independent) when the kids are grown.

RE: Paperwork

I was watching you tube and a Indiana State trooper did a safety inspection and mentioned he needed a log book as well as a certificate of origin. He was referring to a Commercial Vehicle inspection. Your RV does not qualify, unless it is a commercial vehicle. You need your registration. If it is a motorhome, you need your insurance card as well. If its a trailer, your insurance while rolling down the road comes from your tow vehicle.

RE: Fifth Wheel Hitch What Kind

I'm still a couple years out from a 5th wheel, but I'm leaning towards the Goose Box hitch.

RE: RV Queen mattress

Costco has a nice sotre brand memory foam. The good thing about Costco is you can return it to the store for a full refund if you don't like it. Memory foam is great for RVs because you can easily cut it if you have a unique bed size. I have a pinched nerve, so the cheap coil mattress doesn't work for me. Cheap memory foam toppers on top of a cheap coil don't work for me either.

RE: Half ton towing

Looking at these numbers and forums for towing and it is very annoying. Most of these trailers say micro or light but have 900 to 1,000 lb tongue weights. Basically, you need a 2500 to tow anything but a pop-up camper. Half tons have a ton of variables. A 3/4 ton ton truck IN GENERAL is a better vehicle for towing. They are the same size as half ton trucks, but they are more robust in terms of frame, engine, transmission, brakes, wheels, tires and duty cycle. I towed with a half ton and loved it. I bought a new camper that should have been fine (on paper), but after we loaded up all the stuff associated with kids, firewood, bikes, etc, we were overloaded and the tow experience was poor. Upgraded to a 3/4 ton and it tows so much better. Less movement, less push, less noise. It just felt more solid all around. I will never own a half ton truck again. The price difference to move to a 3/4 or 1 ton is pretty minimal, and the upgrade in towing experience is well worth it with a growing family. You can absolutely tow a smaller trailer with a half ton, but you limit yourself to trailer size and "stuff" that you bring with you.

RE: Getting my trailer settled for the winter

Will put the other 2 stabilizers down to take some weight off the suspension. I wouldn't do this. If you get a flat tire, that will transfer your weight onto your jacks, which can damage your jack or your frame. The suspension is made to handle the weight. The stress on the suspension is far greater when you are traveling down the road and hitting bumps and shifting weight.

RE: Recall of 19/20 Ram Cummins 6.7 diesels

Thought it was odd that Ram went to that pump, after having resisted it for years. I'm quite happy with my 2015 DEF Ram. Hope that GM has success with their Denso and the Big 3 are able to find a quality replacement.

That's beautiful! I can't wait to get back to Arizona. Our cross country trip is a little less than 5 years away!

RE: Additional fuel carrying capacity on pickup

“Stress of looking for fuel”. Now that’s down right funny, what no cell phone??? Have you never driven out West, where cell phone reception and gas stations aren't as prevalent as the East coast? If you have a half tank and aren't paying attention (or its raining, or you can't find a large enough station, or a station that offers diesel rather than unleaded, or whatever) you can easily find yourself with very few options and stress starting to creep in. Towing a longer trailer limits gas stations that are preferable. Length to turn around, egress angles, prices near a city/highway as opposed to out in the country, etc. In regards to taking a break after 3 hours, I agree... but I'd prefer to stop at a rest stop or park, rather than a dirty or cramped gas station. If I've got 50 gallons, I can pull right off the highway and stretch my legs, sit outside with the family and eat lunch, etc and get right back on the road. Having 50+ gallons of fuel gives you more options and less stress. I'm not sure why everyone feels the need to denigrate, rather than either offer a helpful answer or simply ignore the topic if it you don't like it. Some of y'all need to go camping...

RE: Memory seats

Bigger question is why are you driving a minivan? :) HA! Clearly you've never driven one, or you wouldn't be asking. 3 kids, plenty of headroom for me, heated and vented seats, heated steering wheel, good gas mileage, storage room for baseball/softball equipment, a folding chair for my bride and a stroller for the baby. Drives smooth, has a nice sound system too! I have zero shame in my game, I've got 3 kids and I'm too tall to have a car seat crammed behind me in most 4 door cars.

RE: Memory seats

I don't plan to own another vehicle without them. I am 6-04, my lovely bride is 5-03 on her tallest of days. Her minivan has the memory seats and it has potentially saved our marriage!

RE: MorRyde IS is finally happening

Curious what this costs? I had a spring break recently on a trip. It could have been substantially worse, but makes me worry now.

RE: Best generator

The OP responded on page 2 about the generator he decided on. And the argument about the pros and cons of solar goes on for another 6 pages. That's funny! :B No... YOUR brand of (truck/trailer/generator/solar panels) is inferior and MY brand is better! Just helping the thread move along =)!

RE: Fuel tank recommendation.

I've been starting my research in preparation for a cross country trip in a couple years. I just can't justify that much money for one of the in bed or replacement tanks. For less than $100 I can buy 3 5 gallon diesel jugs and keep them in the bed. Yes, I would obviously have to pull off the side of the road to refill, but for $900 in savings, that's not a problem for me. I can't believe that there isn't a reasonably priced 15-20 gallon poly tank with a hand crank pump available... Northern Tool has this one, but $320 seems a little absurd. A hand crank pump costs about $50. The tank should cost about $75-80. For $200 for a complete package I would consider it, but $319 is a little steep still.

RE: st augustine fl

We stay at North Beach Camp Resort. Great location, just a few minutes out of downtown but very quiet. Atlantic Ocean is literally across the street.

RE: is running exhaust brake all the time ok?

But if it turns on automatically, you’ll forget to turn it off. That’s dangerous. No it isn't. You don't forget to turn on your headlights, turn on your wipers, and roll up your windows. There's a difference between risk and danger. Its dangerous for people that don't think, but I would argue that the danger is in the lack of thinking, not the exhaust brake...

RE: Winter Storage

Hi All, I bumped into this video on fuel stabilizers: Jeez, I tried to watch but that was painful. Why is he yelling throughout the video? From as much as I could watch, he intentionally added water to it? What is the point of that? If ethanol is hygroscoptic and if he was letting it sit for 9 months why not let it just absorb the water in the air, like it normally would in an engine or tank? I'm not sure what I was supposed to get out of that video, but I got nothing. I've ruined small engines by leaving regular gas over the winter. I've also not ruined a single engine since using a Stabil or Startron type product that allows you to store fuel for longer periods.

RE: Winter Storage

Hi spoon059, I've not used Startron, but Seaform works better for storage for me than Stabil. I didn't know that. I've used Seafoam in the past on my GM engine that would get carbon buildup. Looking at it, it requires an ounce per gallon? That's $10 for a 16 gallon tank! Startron is an ounce per 16 gallons. I buy the 32 oz container for $20 that treats 512 gallons.

RE: Winter Storage

Unless you were driving the vehicle enough for the oils to get hot and the exhaust to burn off liquid, you weren't helping anything and potentially hurting it. Same with the generator, unless you got it to operating temperature and put it under load for a specified amount of time, you aren't helping it at all. I'm not sure if Seafoam is a fuel preservative or not, but if you fill the tanks put something in that will preserve the fuel. Stabil fuel or Startron are my preferred options. I've been using Startron in my small engines for about 10 years now with no issues over the winter. If keeps the ethanol from separating and the fuel from going to garbage. I drain the carbs so the fuel doesn't gum up over the winte rtoo.

RE: Running lights on cars

As Spoon mentioned, motorcycle training, which is defensive riding at it's peak, will make a better driver of you, no matter what you drive. Jerry Easy Jerry, they are going to start calling you cranky and demanding studies!
