I got to be friends with two company fleet managers over the years. One with a fleet of hundreds of our type of trucks, the other had several thousand in the US, along with a fleet of heavy duty trucks. Initial cost, all costs of ownership (fuel, parts, oil, antifreeze, mechanic time and so on), then your exit price when you sell the vehicle. Pass it though Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (Internal ROR) and/or Net Present Value, and there you have it. They bought gas unless the usage mandated diesel (heavy loads). Now for fun, I just loved towing for 10 years with a diesel, but don't confuse that with money. Fun and money, do not normally travel together.

Really battery storage is a dead end. Just look at the energy density and the infrastructure build out. Hydrogen? The embrittlement problem with common carbon steel is going to be hard to solve. The best solution: "esearchers from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Rochester seek to improve this process in a project that recently received $300,000 from the Department of Defense Office of Naval Research. The project, led by the University of Rochester’s Marc Porosoff and Pitt’s Giannis Mpourmpakis, will refine a crucial step in the seawater-to-fuel process, making it more energy efficient, safer, and scalable. The first step of fuel synthesis is converting the carbon dioxide (CO2) extracted from seawater into carbon monoxide (CO). Last summer, the team successfully demonstrated that molybdenum carbide catalysts efficiently and reliably convert CO2 to CO, achieving this critical first step in turning seawater into fuel. The newly funded project will expand on the previous work, seeking to further hydrogenate carbon monoxide into usable fuels using Fischer-Tropsch synthesis." The hard part was making carbon monoxide. With electricity and carbon dioxide (seawater, air recapture, power plant exhaust) you can feed this through the Fischer-Tropsch process and produce hydrocarbon fuels. Germany in WWII did this, as did South Africa in the old embargo days. Then you just blend into the current gasoline and diesel supplies. This also solves the storage problem for solar and wind power generation. Just saying, think out of the box.

This horrible statement by Lantley cannot go unchallenged: "It happens fast, keep looking forward not backwards.....nothing behind you but: pay phones, VCR's, DVD's, horse and buggy's, tube TV's,land line phones and ICE's!" My Amish and "Buggy" Mennonite neighbors from 5 years in South Central Pennsylvania would indeed be shocked that the day of the horse is over. Don't forget Y2K, they were all ready for it. Also a good friend of 30 years, who in the real world designed Pacemakers and pushed them through FDA approval has the strangest hobby I have ever seen. He designs and builds analog signal processing and devices with TUBES. Even more shocking is that more than a few people share this hobby, they buy/sell/trade tubes. He has a 10X10X8 area in his house filled with this stuff. Some of them are worth hundreds of dollars. By the way, got any old tube equipment you want to give away? This true story is intended to break some of the tough feelings in this thread. Old tech never dies, but then again I drive a 1948 CJ2A.

What is your pin weight? A 3/4 ton might work, but you are asking the wrong question. The question is, "Do you need a 3/4 ton?". The price difference is small, but I run a 3/4 ton due to homeowners assoc. rules, hammer lanes in MD and NJ, Baltimore-Washington Parkway, blah and blah. So, a compromise, depending on your needs. If a 3/4 ton will work with your pin weight and you need it, fine. If not, I would get a one ton. With Fords, the camper/snowplow package almost gets you a 1 ton, except on paper.

RE: Cummins 6.7L Gasoline Engine in a Ram?

I bought a herd of Kubota diesel engines converted to casing head gas, to power pump jacks on oil wells. Honda gasoline engines just self destructed. They did not have enough cooling in the heads. They were designed with the evaporation of gasoline in mind for some cooling. If your ran them at max horsepower, they just could not cut it. So, they might have a market, but I don't think it would be real big. Interesting though, assuming you get Cummins support. Would truck owners buy a gas engine, at diesel engine prices???

I am just old enough to remember gas pumps at the truck islands. However,those days are gone. Some (pilot/flying J) have RV islands with gas, that is easy. The other route is what I am doing, 41 gallon gas tank in the bed. I have the tank and pump mounted, gotta run the electric and hoses. I really hate pulling the gas fill piping to cut into it. Wish me luck, if I mess up a new truck, DW will kill me.

When I had diesel, I used gravity feed. With gas, I have to pump. I would not pump diesel, because if you leave the pump on it will have to go somewhere after the truck tank is full. So, if you pump, you need a return line to the deck tank. Just saying.

GY Endurance or Carlisle Radial Trail HD

So, what is the word on the street? I am committed to 15" tires, so pretty much no truck tires will hold the camper. Now the real question, are the Endurance worth the extra 30 or 40 percent, over the Carlisle? I carry 8,050 pounds (after subtracting the pin weight) on 4 ST225/75R15 tires, rated at 2830 pounds each. Thank you for the opinions.

Last summer we drove a rented truck camper up to Deadhorse. I filled up at heart attack prices in Coldfoot and Deadhorse. The highest gas prices I ever paid in my life, while looking at the well head sheds of the north slope. I wonder if they will crack double digit gas prices this summer?

Run the 18 till the wheels fall off. We have been running a 12 HT since new. It has been to the lower 48, and parts of Canada. Some stuff has broken over the years, but not structural or the running gear. After all it is light. If you like it keep it, but if you want a new one, buy it.

They say 400 miles range without a trailer, so 200, maybe only 150 if you want a little reserve with a trailer. Using the don't go below 80% discharge some suggest, even less. Oh well the 50 amp is waiting in the garage. Then the problem of charging in the park, but they are coming, baby steps at first. I know that most (almost all?) will be grocery gitters.

I posted the picture just for a chuckle. It was taken by my friend at a snow park in California. You can rent sleds and cabins for a weekend or a week riding trials in the woods. It is not unknown on "going home day" to start your genny and plug a diesel block heater and battery charger in while you make your last run of the trip. Get back about 10:00, knock the snow off the sleds and load up. The truck gets warm real quick, while your hands are cold and you are a little sweaty. Stop at the first good diner on the way home for lunch. Ditto for the Tesla guys. Exact same thinking. This is a really good idea, if the vehicles have been sitting in the cold and snow for a week.

There is a charger a few miles away, but when he talked to another EV owner, the owner said that he would do the same thing just before leaving. It is for preheat and insurance. The EV in the picture has had the generator running for more than 24 hours. It tickles me as an old tick bitten Petroleum Engineer. Kinda, like a block heater on a diesel, but in reverse.

All of the cost comparisons are flawed. None take into account the time value of money. I think Internal Rate of Return (aka Discounted Cashflow Rate of Return) is best. Net Present Value, is OK. What you bought it for, what you sold it for, and every last cent you spent on the truck are needed, along with miles and duty cycle. This is the metric that companies use to determine gas or diesel for their fleets. And most light duty trucks are gas and heavy duty are diesel, with a gray area in the middle, for sound money reasons.

We doing the whole thing backwards, instead of converting the cars, we should build Fischer-Tropsch plants to covert excess solar/wind to make liquid fuels that can be carbon neutral if atmospheric carbon dioxide is used as the carbon source. Germany ran WWII on these fuels and South Africa defied sanctions and still uses the process today. Granted these used coal for the carbon, but the US Navy is working on using seawater and air, along with the electricity from the nuclear teakettles,to make jet fuel. After all, what runs out first, when you are running max effort airstrikes? The jet fuel silly. The Germans are also running a pilot process, and jets have flown on these fuels. Fischer-Tropsch This solves three problems. 1. It can pull Carbon Dioxide from the air, so it is carbon neutral. 2. It stores wind and solar for future use, say in a combined cycle power plant. 3. It can provide fuel for cars and trucks, and it just blends into the existing infrastructure. No billions to spend on distribution everywhere. Just plants that make the products, crewed by chemical workers. Don't forget we have to replace 276 million cars and trucks with EVs in the USA alone. My way is quicker.

I am just old enough to remember when the truck islands had both diesel and gas pumps. However, I too am switching from a diesel to a gas. I am installing an in bed gasoline tank, with pump and filter. I should only need to fill once a day.
