Yes, don't use diet. The fake sugar compounds don't like being cooked. It doesn't taste good IMHO

Put meat in crockpot. Cover with root beer. Cook. Pull. Add some BBQ sauce and cook a bit more.

From a calorie perspective a few cups of regular pop won't make much difference. If sugar intake is the issue, I don't know, never had to make a low sugar pork shoulder.

-I thought you were making pinto beans. My family "secret" ingredient. Instead of a pinch of baking soda we use a can of regular cola.
Vodka and root beer I have tried but root beer on pork, I would have to taste it first.

Quote: root beer on pork, I would have to taste it first. I don't like root beer either. But in this case, you dump it out after cooking, then add the BBQ sauce.

I've done ribs with coke, and another batch with root beer. Never tried the Doctor. Not a huge taste gain from either soda, it's mostly using the sugar and acid to work it's tenderizing magic.

We've used Dr. Pepper and like you said, it's the acid and sugar that make a difference. Works well on chuck roast too. Just pour off the marinade.
