So in a sense, yes, they have a drone following everyone.

Nope, just involved with a state agency that is setting up to handle this data.

Each state is responsible for and in control of their own state parks, forests, etc. If it is a national park or forest, it is under the control of the federal government. Simple. Numerous states are beginning to reopen closed state facilities. Here in Va, for example, state parks are open for "daytime activities", although the beaches in them are closed except for exercise and fishing. All the camping facilities in the Va state parks are closed as of today. Officially, they are still closed until June 10th, but that could be altered.

I thought privacy constraints mean that legally these companies can't share this data, at least PII/personal data. General volumes maybe, but they can't share information on specific people - not legally. Despite class action suits, reputational risk would cause stocks to plummet. So while they can say that X people traveled in this manner, but they can't disclose that Bob went from here to here, unless Bob himself shared it - and even then not at a data level, only at a user level. On top of that, the data is only as good as the volume of users who have these social networks and if their location information is on.

It's good enough for this purpose. You be amazed what people opt into, or their governors opt them into. This is an "end justified the means" situation.

There's surprisingly little electronic privacy protection in the US, compared to the EU.

I hear you and totally agree. Data is the new oil and it's being shared often with or without consent. The dollar and power rule. I have friends and relatives who share way too much digitally and have no clue how it's being used. Big brother is alive and well and we not only enable it, we facilitate it's growth and then groan about the consequences. Heck we pay for it. Siri, Alexa, all of them were designed as data collectors under the guise of gadgetry and helpfulness. I digress.

You know I was only ribbing you about the voices thing.. I couldn't resist. [emoticon]

The link for the states has not been updated since Apr 30. Looking at MI, the information is not up to date as there is currently a stay at home order in place thru May 28th.
