What camper? If it is longer than 8', better leave the tailgate at home.

I’d remove it. Wouldn’t want it bouncing as I drive.

My new truck camper hung over the back of my truck... I had an 8' bed. I would remove tailgate and leave it home.. if it works, you can always put it back on.

Leave the tailgate off. I made that mistake once when I went to pick up a camper. I had to bring the tailgate home inside the camper. Wouldn't have been so bad except it was a rainy day and the tailgate already had wet road grime all over it.

plus many slide into bed but are wider behind truck bed (cover truck lights) and the tailgate cables will be in the way

for 8 foot bed ALWAYS take it off. No camper that I have ever seen require an 8 foot bed to also have a tailgate down. For a 6 foot bed trying to haul an 8 foot camper then you are hacking it to death, so bring a thick moving blanket and plan to put tailgate in the camper for drive home where you can sit and stare at it while regretting getting the wrong camper.

I don’t follow.
What does this have to do with the OP?
Are you suggesting that TCs should not hang out the back of short beds, only long beds?

Strange post....
