If I buy an RV in Caiif from a private party and drive it to AZ where I live, do I still have to pay the CA sales tax? I will obviously pay AZ sales tax when I register it in AZ.
Has anyone done this?

Sales tax is usually paid to the state/county where you register the vehicle. For example, in the past two years, we have purchased a new car (in New Mexico) and a new RV (in Georgia). We are domiciled in Texas and, in both cases, the sales tax was paid to the county in Texas where we are domiciled at the time of title application.

^That is how in works in AZ and ID for that matter. You pay the tax where you register.

I have read it may depend on where you take delivery. I read a lot of CA cars shipped out of CA to deliver an out of state purchase. Call the CA DMV and ask. You do not want CA on your tail for this. At the very least write in the bill of sale that the RV was delivered to you in AZ, both sign. May also have to stay out of CA for a year. People were doing this to buy a CA RV and register in a Montana LLC or similar to avoid CA tax and registration.

I've purchased two different vehicles from people (not dealers) in Ca and I live in Az. Zero sales tax paid to Az or Ca. Here if you buy from a private owner, from any state, Arizona will not charge you sales tax.

No sales tax in Az if it was a private party sale.
There is no reason to pay Cali tax on a private sale

My experience 12 years ago. Bought a fifth wheel from a couple in Poway. Went out to CA to complete the deal and take the trailer home.
The owner took us to the local CA DMV office to help navigate the process. He was keeping his tag as he had a new fifth wheel on order. I was required to pay CA "use" tax, registration, tag, and title fees. $2500 all in, CA didn't issue a temporary tag or transit permit. Proved I was a FL resident, didn't matter.
Went to local tax collector office when I got home. Explained the situation when applying for FL tag and title. The clerk made a couple calls to the main office. I walked out paying only $51 dollar registration fee. The clerk made copies of the bill of sale and CA DMV documents. A couple of weeks later I received a refund check for the difference between FL sales tax and the $2200 CA use tax.

If it has been sitting for a few years without yearly license plates you could be into Ca. for the cost of those missed Tags. Could be VERY EXPENSIVE ($2500 per years?) I'd just stay away from ANYTHING from the PRofC. Peoples Republic of Cah-Lee-Far-Nia.
