Hi all, Got a busted dome over shower and was thinking of putting down a clear sheet of clear plastic or plex over opening instead of another dome. it would be screwed down and sealed for sure. I really do not want another dome. Is this something that someone has done or am I looking
at a mod that cannot work? Would welcome any other ideas.
Thanks

Make sure the plastic you buy resists UV rays then give it a try IMO.

Most skylights are actually two domes, an inner and an outer.
And I replaced only my outer (after setting something on it and popping a large hole in it).
If you remove both inner and outer, and then place a flat sheet for the outer, you will have the roof support exposed, which wouldn't look good.
IMHO

Clear is going to let a lot of heat in on sunny days.

I just did mine, and considered the same thing. There is an inner dome, as was mentioned, but in my case it did not stuck up above the roof, so a flat sheet could have worked. But frankly it would have looked bad. And a proper domed cover was not expensive, so for me it was proper to just get the intended cover.

I recently replaced my whole roof and also the skylight cover. Only needed the cover and not the whole skylight. This one fit perfectly and was of very high quality. Mine is over the shower and I wanted less light so got the smoke colored one but during the day it hardly makes any difference. They have many different sizes and styles.

If even tinted has more light/heat transfer than wanted, put a coat of white water based exterior paint on the top most part of the cover.

A dome will shed rain water, a flat piece of Lexan or acrylic will collect water once you put the caulking over the screw heads. Green mold will collect there unless you build a curved dam on each end of the flat plastic sheet and wrap it over the dam so the center is higher than the edges.
